What sedatives are available for knocking a dog down to staple or stitch that’s over the counter without a prescription?  When I have help I don’t really need it but I hunt 95% of the time alone and holding a dog down and stapling is pretty hard to get done by myself.  My sage dog got the bottom of his jaw cut pretty good and he’s done ripped them out so I’d like to stitch it but he’s a pain to work on

Isn’t dex just an anti inflammatory?  I was talking about something to knock a dog out or at least calm them way down so I can work on them

This is not over the counter but if you know some horse people you could probably get hold of Ace Promazine . 1cc will normally lay them down enough to work on them.

At this point it’s probably too late to do any good with sewing or stapling and for sure if you don’t have a bell collar to keep him from scratching them out again. Vetericyn or a paste made out of castor oil and alum would probably be your best bet. JMO

Cajun I had access to it when my wife was still shoeing horses but not since she got away from it.  I’m gonna see if she can get some to keep on hand

T-dog yea I’m not gonna worry about it now. I just been packing it with furazone and keeping him on antibiotics. I’m sure it’ll heal fine but just take a lot longer. I’ve heard of the castor oil and alum and I’ll give it a try to

Spray CutHeal twice a day directly on cuts for a few weeks…antibiotics for the first 10-14 days and dog will heal up nicely as long as it's a muscle or skin wound…

yes i got that wrong dex is really good for poisoning or snake bites. I cant spell it but xalizine or also called rompum is what we use, have to know the dosage bc its what vets use to put dogs down. I do agree with said statements, most of the time just keeping it clean with a good cut heal product and picking the scabs so it heals from the inside out is all i do on big wounds and never had trouble

Yessir that’s what I thought. I need to get some of it anyway.  I’ve seen more canebreaks in the last 2 years than I have the rest of my life combined

I dont know of anything over the counter that would actually work.

When I have to do mine. I have injectable lidocaine (rx) but i have powdered lidocaine you can buy otc. I mix it with straight tap water and spray a liberal amount. It helps a ton if they are numbed up good.

But, I work on my dogs as pups to be able to work on them. I dont have to use anything stitiching or sewing but the numbing agent. I use rompum if I need to do other stuff like pull broken teeth.
