Sometime life gets busy and you do things you regret.  My dad is 67 years old and has multiple sclerosis. For those that don't know it's an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). He gets along good but his right leg doesn't work quite like it should and therefore it's hard for him to get around in the woods anymore, let alone on flat ground. Anyway he's the type that won't let it slow him down but it sure ticks him off at times. Last year we went on an elk hunt in New Mexico and he took a nice 5x5 bull. It was his first elk and I was more excited for him than he was. I don't think I was excited about him killing it but the fact that we got to share the experience together....which leads me to my opening sentence. My dad asked me about 3 months ago if I wanted to go on the hunt again. I thought I was too busy with work and family stuff and decided I should probably pass on this trip. He tried and tried to get me to go but I declined. He told me it wouldn't be the same without me but he was going. For 3 months he tried to talk me into going and I declined. We all need to step back at times and realize it's the simple things in life that keeps our heart ticking.....not the money we make or the cars we drive but our family. My dad may not have many more years to do things like this and it really set home when he called Sunday morning to tell me he got a real good one. I sure wish I could have experienced it with him, the excitement, the thrill of the hunt and the lasting memory it leaves.....NEXT YEAR!!! Congrats to Mr Oneal! Kevin I have only met your dad once but he left an impression on me and it wasnt hard to tell that yall get along great and care for one another. If nothing else let this be a lesson that never leaves you or or any of us to take the opportunities when given to spend time with the people that we are close to. My grandpaw turned 82 last week and I haven't seen him in probably four months. I think I just found a good reason to make a visit!

Matt, go visit him. I lost my grandfather more than 15 years ago and I can still remember the last conversation and hug we shared.

Damn good bull. Tell Mike congrats, and that I expect to have some elk steak next time I'm up there. I'm glad he was able to make the trip. Maybe after taking that bull, he will have more self control when it comes to the Okie whitetails.  |

Kevin,
I just read this thread for the first time. Congrats! Congrats on several things, the biggest being your understanding on what life is truly about. I've always considered myself thoughtful and caring, but after having children, I've come to learn just how selfish I've always been. Your father is a very lucky man to have a son like you. God bless both of you.
