Well I am not happy tonight. I have a dog that I thought was coming along really well. In a bay pen he does a really good job bays hard little grit. In the woods he looks to work well, but has not found a hog yet. BUT HE HAS FOUND A DAMN SQUIRREL. To make it worse he was proud of himself and ran to the next tree. I don't know what to do. How do I break him form that?

Sell him to a squirrel hunter or get a squirrel in a live trap and do a little breaking. I'd try breaking first. Good luck with him.

Sell him to a squirel hunter and get a hog dog!lol I have never had that problem but I am sure it can be fixed by turning him in fresh sign only, and once he starts finding hogs on his own and he gets the idea, then shock him off of treeing squirels. Be sure you reward him well for finding hogs.

A squirrel is game. It is finding game. Could just be making a trip hazzard out of its self.

When my pup/dogs are young they will bay or tree anything that moves....hogs, cattle, horses, shunks, birds, bikes, wind blown sacks, snakes, cats, you name it. I never get upset with a young bay dog for being a bay dog. Just feed him fresh hog sign, and scold him for any off game.

He is still very young and him trashing is not a bad thing in my book. He needs to be corrected yes but he is hunting and that is what you want now ween him off the trash and get him straight on hogs.

Clay is right on. If your dog has the drive to chase then he has the drive to hunt. It might take more work than other dogs but can be done. You can't give a young dog alot of rein. Keep them close and make 100% sure that he is on a hog before you let him run, even if you have to bust the hogs out of the brush for him. Your hard work will pay off over time and you will have a dog that can be trusted not to trash. This is much better than trash breaking a young dog and risk loosing his drive to hunt. JMO

I don't really agree with that idea. I give my pups alot of rein. I want to raise bold dogs with a ton of drive. A bay dogs job is to bay things, and he should noy be afraid to bay or run a track. Are they going to trash, you bet. But if you have any kind of handle on your pup you can let him know what is good to run and what is not good to run and he will figure it out real quick. I have never and will never use a shock collar. You need to get a pup broke to mind you, and please you. It works better than burning their neck out of the blue and calling that training. I can use my dogs on hogs or cattle and just tell them to leave one or the other alone and they will because they will work what I ask them to. Handle is the key to training, bold dogs that are not scared to make a mistake will hunt harder IMO.

update! well yesterday I took him into the baypen. He did better then he has ever done before. Even put a shoat in a enclosed horse trailer and he ran around that trailer for over an hour. He had so much going on that he didn't have time to trash. Next is to get him to find in the woods.
The input has been very helpful again Thanks
