First off, I wouldn't hold it against Mike to nix this post straight off.... anything Dogo seems to have a tendency to blow up into something fugly on here every damn time... But for my sake, please try and keep this post as polite, respectful, and fact oriented as possible... PLEASE Allow me to begin... from the beginning, I have had no pregudice against where a hog dog comes from... as long as he is built correctly, has a good personality and produces hogs, I don't give a chit where he came from.... and will incorporate that into my breeding program Having been around my ONE AND ONLY Dogo "Bucho" for the last year... I am VERY interested in this breed as this specimen has shown all the attributes that I look for in my cur dogs... GENETIC HOG DOG... yet supremely easy to get along with... "like-able" if you will... Having been the only Dogo I've been around in "real life" situations... I cannot conclusively say that he is a "superb" example of the breed, or just an average one... whatever he is, however, I love(as do all that have had the pleasure to be around him).... he is simply nice to be around, makes my family/hunting partners feel safe at home and in the field... Is he breed worthy? I have no idea, as I have nothing to make an educated comparison to... Would I/my hunting partners like another just like him? ABSOLUTELY. Is there a better line of dog out there that I/we might like better? Probably. And here is where I need your help, I am interested in another, possibly a female to breed to Bucho if I find that he is a breed-worthy specimen... by which I really need to hunt with others to compare... All of you Dogo breeders, or even those that simply have experience in hunting them... I'd love to hear your thoughts on these dogs, and who breeds FUNCTIONAL examples... I have researched this thoroughly... and have come to the conclusion that a trip to Argentina would be necessary to actually hunt with individuals to find what it is I'm after... Thankyou for your time.

Kevin here on ETHD is the most realistic person I have been around involving the dogo. He's not afraid to cull one or several when needed, and has been around them as long as anyone else I know in the states.
Even though he may be a Dogo enthusiast, he remains objective of the breed, and has been around enough Dogos from different kennels, that I would take what he says to the bank.
Add to that, when I bought a Dogo from him, he gave me a price. Then sent the pup to me and said not to pay him until the dog was ~18 months old... How many Dogo breeders do you know that are more interested in the advancement of the breed than the money they get from a litter?

I know what you speak of in regards to ol' Kevin... he's a dry one... and we have talked... I LOVE an objective dog "person", anything less is pointless if you're trying to make better dogs... Marvin is another that I respect completely... but I'm trying to look at the bigger picture... there are not that many Dogo breeders that actually hunt their dogs hard... not to mention in the US... I am not interested in getting a dog from a "kennel" as much as an individual dog.

Can somebody tell me why Los Cazadores Dogos are never spoken of on this site? Is there some feud I am unaware of?

I don't think Los Cazadores Dogos has ever been on here Noah. If I remember correctly, years back, the Rankin family in South Texas bred and hunted a line of dogos.
But as you begin your search... remember what Skoal always said, "listen with your eyes".

Noah I have read this over and over I can't seem to comprehend what your saying. Could you explain that a little better?

Timmy,
Just having a dog from any breeder is not good enough for some. It is the specific animal with specific heritage and genetics that some are after. I myself am like the latter. It is only the total package that will satisfy that void.

Noah, I know nothing about Dogos but I really like the looks of T Colts Soco dog. I never seen him in person but from the pics I seen of him he just has that look about him. He is definitely proven. I think I read that he got him from some folks in Florida. If you can research and find a sister or mother or aunt or grand mother to breed to or get a pup from this line I think you would have a real good shot at some good puppies. Just my thoughts.

ETHHunters... No problem, I wondered if that might need clarification...
The more I study the Dogo, the more I have understood the magnitude of how widespread the breed has become... the Dogo has a massive breeding pool in Europe... specifically what used to be Russia from what I can see... what is interesting, is that I have been told by these same people that hunting with dogs is against the law where they live... yet the dogs are still bred... and bred... I can feel myself digressing into another subject... sorry
....back to your question... there are Dogo breeders, and then there are Dogo breeders that hunt and know what is necessary in a hog dog.
... for example... let's say, to make a point, I lost all my cur dogs and had to start from scratch again... first off, I would go to a person that I know raises nice dogs... HOWEVER... just because a few nice dogs have come from this person does not mean that everything that comes from this same person will be of the same caliber...
... Every "kennel" has it's #1 dog, the dog that the owner and his closest friends look forward to getting a pup from.... this is the dog that I strive for... often something one must experience to even know that is what you have always wanted...

jimco... I completely agree with you... Soco sounds like my kind of dog... would not take all that much info for me to track down who bred him... all I need is a name or two...

Noah I know what you mean. After being around a few Dogos I just like the Dogo. La Dogos is not a kennel but instead it is Marvin. He does not crank out dogs. Not to start defending him because I don't think I can as good as other people. But I would say to look into the people and find people that you can deal with. I have seen some crazy Dogo deals but don't want to stir stuff up. You may have to travel to the parents hunt. But I recommend patience. I hope my puppies turn out.

I agree dub... even with carefully screened parentage, there is still a lot of luck involved

I agree dub... even with carefully screened parentage, there is still a lot of luck involved I like 3 generations of hard core proven dogs behind a pup and even then buy 2 pups to increase the chances of getting what one wants...

Im not a breeder but Ive only owned a few dogo culls and a few keepers. The Los Cazadores Dogos I have been around (2) were not my favorite. There are a lot more quality dogos than I am aware of but for what its worth here is some of my knowledge...I think anyone on here with a clue will tell you Kevin is the real deal. I can also personally tell you the PPC line is consistantly throwing athletic dogs with high prey drive, via ladogos, tcolt, myself, hoghunterdfw etc. They are also great pets etc. whatever you pick my advice is get one out of several generations of catching and health since so many culls are in the breed. Good luck The good ones I have owned were worth the lessons I learned from the others

Noah, did you say on another thread awhile back that Bucho had skin problems?
Not asking to be a prick either ......just understand that can be a common problem with the breed.

Yes, it seems at the beginning of every summer he gets hot spots... which I've learned to treat with "Corona"(a anti-fungi horse med) with good result... it's strange... in that he get's these hot spots on his head and lower limbs for a couple weeks and then no more issues... strange....
He also was real slow to heal when I first got him... but since, has shown "typical" healing qualities... thinking his immune system got up to speed??.... I don't know... but he's adjusted well somehow
