Razorback hogs, are there any left in the wild or are they extinct??

When i was 10 or 12 we went to a registered angus cattle sale in Ark and while looking at the place we drove by a hog pen full of those slab sided long skinny tall razorbacks, they were all red and looked like ribbons to me, extremely narrow almost like a ribbon fish, had never seen any in person and have not ever seen  anybody post a picture of one of these we used to call razorbacks, this was in the early 1960s i saw a pen of them, anybody got them wild in there area or have they vanished due to the wild feral russian type of hog we see everywhere now days??  I remeber asking the owners about them and they said they trapped them every year down on a bottom by a river and killed them in winter and smoked em, they had big teeth as i remember seeing sows with tooths showing like some of the russian types we used to hav e down at refugio from the nationa refuge at austwell in the 60's, lots of striped wooly looking hogs not like the type we see today, we used to call them powerhorn hogs as we had a freind who had a ranch up there and all fo these hogs looked really russian for sure, high front ends, no back butt, big teeths and striped at birth and some at adulthood, rare to see a striped hog down here any more for sure.

Well sir, we've got several here in Brazoria county and FortBend county but anymore they got so much black influence they all throw multi colored litters. I've seen a single sow with 9-11 shoats on the tit who will have piebald, red, striped and straight blacks. I've caught several red razorbacks but id be willing to bet they were simply genetic throwbacks.

  In lee, milam co we have lots of pigs, that when are real young, are red with black stripes.  As they get older they loose the stripes and turn red or black.  I dont know but I have always herd, this is the russian influance in them.  If this is so it explains these suckers running like they were grayhounds.

We get that alot also in limestone county also red spotted ones. I have caught a few boars about 150/180# that wore stripes.

The hog posed to be let go by the spanish in texas was a tamsworth, i think now is extinct in europe, the hogs we used to see were tiger striped as adults some times if they were close to austwell, these hogs had 3 kinds of wool as well and were really roached back with a ridge of hair, these hogs now days are sure not what we used to have when i was a kid down here, we have gone from really russian looking and really almost domestic hogs to those black boggers that are seen everywhere, i
have searched and searched for a picture of the old tyme slab sided hog and can not find one to save my life, if you ever see one in person you would be stunned at the way they were made up being so narrow, i am going to see if i can find a picture of a european tamsworth hog on google images bbl.

I've seen one, which I doubt was a pure one, in the five years I've been huntin. We hit a group of pigs and caught a sow and about thirty yards from the bay there was a red boar bowed up snorting at us. Was thin as could be with his hair standin up on his back in a straight line. Closest thing I've seen to one anyways.

I don't know for certain if we are talking about the same type of hog but 25 years ago we seemed to catch the no butt at all, deep chested, four plus inches of hair on their back, no run at all, two plus inches of teeth, one hog wreck a good pack of dogs type of hog (we called them marsh hogs). I think attrition has taking that type of hog from the gene pool due to the fact they had zero fear/run to them.

These hogs have some pretty Unique Russian Charictaristics about them. More so than most other hogs i have caught or seen caught.  Some of the other hogs I see look russian but when you look really close these have some pretty intriguing features. 

1. Very small Hams, Large Shoulders


2. Very Small Ears .
 

3. A wooley undercoat which looks like  sheep wool.




4. And the long hairs are split on the ends . 





Oh and I forgot to post a picture of there feet/hoofs .  They are more pointed on the toes kinda almost look like a deer track. A domestic hogs toes are more rounded on the end.

And there Skulls are more flat with longer noses than a domestic.

This is Mostly all i catch are russian hogs. The russians are the cooliest looking hogs there are in my opinion. BUT, if I had my way I would catch all these suckers and eradicate them and replace them with some listed hogs or durocs .    These russians run like no other , in my opinion.  But do make some Beautiful wall mounts.

That pic of that lil brown boar is what started showing up down here around austwell refugio in the 60s to 70s a lot, there was a english guy named John Tatton who married a Ochonner gal and had about 100,000 acre ranch right on the coast, he sent over to england for tamsworths and also some russian the story goes, as soon as the screworms got killed off we started seeing this no ass high shoudler roach hair on top wooly looking hog like lil brownie and for sure they all had teeth way more than the feral tame type we had on our ranches in Bee county, in fact i remeber several times seeing hamps durocs chester whites that could have been show hog propects at one time, but the creeks in bee county all end up in san antonio or copano bay next to the National Aransas Wildlife refuge which johen tatton gave to the state of texas for life but kept grazing rights and mineral rights on it, it was full of russian striped hogs in the late 60's and 70's, if you ever go to the visito center you can see 2 or 3 striped adults with huge teeth they have life size mounts of in the hog room, dont see that russian down here anymore or the colored hogs, its like the black hogs have taken over strain has risen to the top, that picture of the wool and split ends sure rings a bell as i remeber them having that wooly undercoat and wire brissles like the one in your picture, pretty cool pictures on this thread for sure, sure interesting to see the different strains of wild hogs we all hunt on here too, really shocked to see piney woods rooters mentioned as almost all gone as well, I looked and looked for a picture of a slab sided razorback but i can not find one for still, i find mentions of them being chased and killed but no pictures, these are like in the 30s to 50's, seems like they diasapered or got hunted out or something, if you ever saw a slab sided razorback its something like no other hog profile for sure, I did find some Spanish hogs called Iberians blacks that look just like these black hogs now that seem to have taken over on a gogole image search of wild hogs of spain, check out the native hogs of france and there is a blue spotted hog still being rasied with a weird name to spell, looks blue and black spotted like a lot of pics on here i see posted sometimes, has anybody got any yellow or sandy hog pictures, it has been eons since i have seen one of them as well, used to have some on the ranch in one area, then the blacks took over and they dieapeared??

  Anyways you could post pictures of sandys???  I know what you mean about the tusks, seems like they grow sideways and pointy, when cornered they just fight like mad for there size, sounds like a dog killing machine, one of the worst dig killers i got on was a 150 pounder like this, was a red spotted boar that got in a oak tree mott and just charged every dog they got to close until he had them all cut down bad while keeping his back to the trees, he could spin in a instant too, i stuck a 10 inch dirk vertically in the shoulders from a tree limb and he turned and tusked the tree deep where i was hangin earlier, crazy sob was dead game even while dying he was still trying to stick anything, silver and sandies colored been a long time gone from my area for sure, heck its a big deal to even see red spotted or red anymore nowdays, and for sure no wooly lookers anymores.

Im a lil off subject, In the area I live we have a assortment of hog types.  The last couple of years it seemes we are getting more color,  grays, red, red with spots, black with white front feet,  and ect.  but most are still black.  Their is a large variation in them all,  some older mature boars that only weigh maby 150, and others that may go 300.  Some are short, some are tall, some short bodied,some long bodied, and some are long tall and thick.  The head shape has a great deal of variation also,  most of them do have longer snouts, but some are completely flat, with no or little rise in the head.  Their is also a great difference, in feet and bone size, that is not equil to body size.  Some have a great deal of long course hair on their back, while others dont.   This summer we caught a smaller sow that was gray, with almost no hair on her whole body.  A couple of weeks ago I caught a 220 boar that was a strawberry blond,  he was sure pretty.  Over the years we have caught a few boars, that had a tail like a Shetland pony.   About 10 years ago I got into a group of hogs  that, were very small, narrow, and agressive.  I bayed around 20 hogs, and the old boars only weighed maby 100, 125lbs.  When I sent in catch dog and he caught, several of them attacked the dog.  One ran out about 40 yards and put me up a tree, and cut my boot sole!  These hogs had no run in them and only wanted was a fight.  I once found an area were I believed there was only one hog in the area, and from the size of his track I guessed him as really big, 300 up, and with him by himself maby a barr.  When we caught him it was a single boar, didnt even weigh 175, but his feet and legs were huge.   Another time I caught a group of what I believed, was all barron sows.  The 3 I caught were red, and body size, should have weighed maby 125, but they were so fat they probally all went around 200lbs.   The only thing that is consistant is that these hogs very seldom have much teeth, I dont no but I believe this is genetic, and due to the sandy soil in the area.  I know a cow or horse's teeth wear more in the sand, so why not  hog!

i dont take many pictures sometimes iwish i did but these new phones got to many functions on them. my wife wont letme take her camera last one she had went swimming in pond with me! ur right about the weight though the are mostly skinny and flanked up ones i seen seem to have stripes up their face but like i said its been awhile.them hogs have claimed afew dogs and i dont care to see them again.

Try to buy a toss away 35mm camera from Walmart, it will fit in your pocket in foil it u toss the box away and has a flash, I been on here 2 years and i cant remeber ever seeing a tiger striped hog in any of the pictures on here??

Anybody got any yellow or sandy or blonde hog pics, how about tiger strippers, who has one of those??  Bullet where did you hunt that tigerstriper at??  I dont know if you are in Texas r Florida or where, we used to have a few way way back but it has been years since i saw one live or dead, i have kids try to tell me there is no such thing and i tell them to drive 30 miles over to Austwell Texas to the refuge display, they have 2 like the one in th epicture thread up a ways here except it has tiger stipes, there used to be a tiger striped boar mounted over at the old store at McFanner Texas off US 77 u could go in and see but i think its shut down now, wish lavon davis was here and had his pictures online, i saw a tiger striper he had caught i think at the powerhorn or maybe angelton somewhere back in the 70's, was really kewl, anybody else ever see striped hogs recently anywhere, seems like they be in florida as well but i have no clue, blonde hogs pics be kewl as welllol
