I don't know for certain if we are talking about the same type of hog but 25 years ago we seemed to catch the no butt at all, deep chested, four plus inches of hair on their back, no run at all, two plus inches of teeth, one hog wreck a good pack of dogs type of hog (we called them marsh hogs). I think attrition has taking that type of hog from the gene pool due to the fact they had zero fear/run to them.

x2...in the mid 1980's we caught more of the barnyard hogs, the round ham and the flop ear on some of them. These hogs would rather fight than take flight. They would run but wouldn't mind stopping to fight.

My brother and I built a baypen and it was grown up with weeds when we put in 3 black colored shoats The mtn cur pups would find them and bay them. Those shoats eventually would get caught by the pups and they made more racket moving thru the weeds. A friend showed up with some black and red striped russian pigs of about the same age. These pigs would not bay up... they would break and run and hit the other end of the pen. All you could see was the weeds just moving when they ran. That was some good training for the 3 month old pups because they had to trail them.

My theory is that the easy ones have been caught and now we see more of the russian types around here or a mixture of both. Its kind of like breeding better dogs. The cream rises to the top...but mother nature does not make mistakes like we humans do...

The black and red striped shoats turn a blend/mixture of red and black hair as they get older and in the winter they tend to look wooly and have the split ends on the hair like mentioned above...

I have seen quite a few solid red and solid black hogs around oyster creek where there is now hog hunting allowed and quite a few spotted  hogs.

KnightStock, do you remember the ads in the back of the outdoorlife and field and stream magazines that advertised russian/feral hogs for sale to stock up your hunting leases? These ads were running in the 1960's and possibly the early 1970's...

I do know that back then we didn't have any hogs around my area where I grew up but it is full of hogs now...

Back in the day 70to 80's I used to get a big kick with Lavon hunting up there on those back roads angelton area all up and down the brazos, back then about every hog was a runner and russian seemed like that Lavon caught when i went up there in his area, thats weird that now they have all gone feral colored kina, others say the same thing on these posts recently, must be the tamer stain overproduces the russian types in litter sizes, i just dont know, do russian hogs strains have smaller litters or whats up with them getting pushed out??  I dont remeber adds but i am sure no doubt it was going on, i do remeber going to the Y O ranch because we had bought some angora hair goats next door to it and they had some russians in a pen they were showing off and turning loose behind the deer fence, this was in the 60's so I am sure those adds were running, about 5 years after they were hunting those russians on that ranch we had a animal damage control trapper down here and he gave us a Lacy dog that he was using to hunt hogs with that were bothering kid goats or something like that, the russians the y o had escaped and were starting to bother goats herds was the story, we had 5000 angoras but this was before there were any hogs in north bee county like now, i know i could not swear a wild hog will eat a baby kid but they are dumb enuff to let them for sure, especially angoras, i bet a spanish goat would fight them off or not lose the kid like those angoras did, but we sold off the goats when th emarket died and i think that lacy went into a cow dogs pack, I still can not beleive all the places that have hogs on them for sure, wont be long till they are in New york city downtown eating out of garbage dumsterslol

KNIGHTSTOCK ive inly huntedhogs about seven years im in n.w. ark n.e okla. the few hogs ive seen that were talking about are not tiger striped there light striped from tusk to ear kinda like a smile if that makes sense hogs are new to this country been here about 12 or 15 years the old timers that grew up in the mountains where i hunt some told me that free range hogs were common when they were kids id think that would be in the 30s or 40s but wiped out. however the few that ive caught ive shown them they say there new to them. maybe the were turned loose by somebody i dont know.ive not seen one in awhile then last ones were 2 boars with some sows they killed three  out of four of my curs. the sows looked like regular old hogs multi colored. that was a bad deal differnt story  so with out pics i maybe out line i do know that the 6 or8 boars that ive cuaght that look like this are meaner than crap and fight even when there tied and on there back this ive not seen before. im gonna get some of those cameras thanks.

The stripes i am talking about are on the side and run horzonailly after i started thinking about it, not tiger strped at all, but these were adult hogs with big teeth, heck the sows had teeth showing some and all ran like deer if u ever got on them, those lil toss a ways work pretty good for sure, omg dont try to use a iphone and return it, i got mine sweaty and i did not drop it in water and had to buy new one becuase when they send it in they claim it was dropped in water even with insurance i lost over $300 on that deal for sure, when u see some of those old timers ask them if those free ranger hogs were slab sided or russian looking, i am thinking they were prob the actual razorbacks that were still left, what i dont get is why did the razorbacks disapear up there, did they clear off th eland, run em with dogs too much or did people move to town and quit working and raising them and marking and turning them loose???  Wonder if they were red or black as well, be kewl if somebody from your state knows and has some pictures, they were really something to see in person, feral just means untamed but razorback to me means they are thin like the ones i have seen in person, to me i dont think a razorback hog is  a russian if that makes sense but i not from up there or know the difference.  I have never seen a wooly russian that was thin like the hogs they called razorbacks??  Anybody know the difference??  Can a razorback be a russian or were they a seperate strain that the old timers raised and worked every year in Arks??

That hog is suosed to have been trapped on the red river somewhere, i have never seen or heard of a face striped hog until u mentioned yours in your hunting area, be cool if you could catch some alive and breed them up for sure, notice the tail on the hog as well, wonder if this is closer to a real razorback than these russian or ferals we have now, sure a different look for sure, wish i could find a adult picture of one of these face striped hogs, do you have any you could post for us??  Thanks for mentioning it, would have never known there was a face striped hog??

these were both sows.they also have short tails around this property.most hogs around here run.if one bays up and stands thats a treat.usualy they may bay for 5 sec.then run hard as they can to some thick stuff then try to leave the country.i run all kinds of dogs plotts curs and crosses.breedin towards ruffer dogs need em to pull some hair anyways.sometimes i think you can catchem better with dog that are under your feet.that away they bay right at you and bulldog gets there before they can run.

John, where did u get that hog, what state, what was the race like etc, cool picture and some goodf looking dogs as well, man i wish we had those down here still, i cant remeber seeing that much hare on a hog in years where i live, used to see some but now that hog would keep the cooler door open from people going in to see if hanging, is that a typical hog for your area???
