Just wondering how big is too big for a catch dog? My brother has a American bulldog that's pushing 160 lbs and just over a year old but the dog has never seen a pig and was wondering if he was too big to try and see if he shows any interest to being a catch dog. Any advise is appreciated

Well imo if he catches you could use him as a leed in catch dog but would'nt send him from to far no more than 50 75 yrds and would watch him in the heat because of his size he can over heat quick but that's jmo

i don't know i think a catchdog has to be super athletic able to run,, jump, go into the thick stuff where the hogs usually like to make there stand and that big a dog would most likely be slow as hell . just my thoughts on the subjt.

Thanks for yalls input I understand what your saying about being able to run jump and everything and as big as he is he can clear a 4 foot fence flat footed and all he does is run all day but I was just wondering cause my brother doesn't do anything with him and he need somethin to keep him busy so I figured I would see what he could do but I wanted some outside input to help me out cause I'm just getting started and could use all the help I can get so thanks again I appreciate yalls help

A dog that big might be hard to control once he learns what a bay is. He just might pull you to the hog through briars and all.

i like a small bulldog myself 45 lbs to 60 tops. a lot of times i catch em in stuff where i will just grab the bulldog by vest strap to toat his over to a tie out. they r easier to handle, cheaper to feed and i could carry 3 bulldogs on a wheeler compared to just one of the weight u r describing. also a small bulldog can fit down all the lil hog trails most of the time, and with a vest on that will hang up that is a huge factor to weigh in.

that's a good point I didn't think about him getting caught up with a vest on and honestly I don't know if theres a vest that will fit him with as big as he is.thanks for the advise

I don't think there is an exact answer to your question...just a bunch of opinions. For example...when I hunt off of my polaris ranger, the dog you are describing would be too big. He would take up all the space I have. When hunting open pastures with small oak heads that using a truck, I think this dog would be great. Land with hard ground, he could probably run well. Hunting swamps and marsh with alot of mud, he may get stuck in mud that he could not get out of. I think, you should condiser the places that you hunt...if he works in those areas, you are good to go. He may end up killing a lot of smaller hogs depending on where he catches. If he locks down and is hard to get off, you are going to need to good breakstick or some other way of getting him off the hog. All things to consider.....best advice I could give is take him hunting and see what happens.

i had a 135 ab when he finally got down to a good running weight but he was 150+ when i got him

Having owned both, I can say that both have their advantages and disadvantages. I say hunt the way you like and use what ever dogs work best for you. On one hand I like the way our big cd could handle a big nasty hog and on the other hand, I like the fact that you can grab a small cd by the cut vest strap and tote him like a suitcase across a fallen tree over a creek.  |
