Best dog we ever owned was a Plott Catahoula cross. He turned on late but was a hell of a dog and die young not due to a hog. some type if aneurysm in the head. He was a one out dog about 75 pounds and would Set the biggest of boars down on their bottoms. He would grab them by the cousins and get them stopped. I had the same dog, catch piglets without biting them or hurting them at all. He'd nudge them with his nose and head and keep them corralled till you got there. He was truly a very special dog with a great personality. Here he is with a hog. I doubt we will be lucky enough to have another one like him but I sure hope so.

Over half our our dogs are plott/pit bred to a cat. Jam up dogs. Silent on track. Gritty
I like them we catch our fair share with them, and are keeping the last litter of 7 all to hunt for us.

I had one a couple years ago named Ace. He was heck on a hog, had a tremendous amount of bottom and had the loudest hound mouth you ever heard. I could listen to him sing at a hog all night. Unfortunately he didn't get the hunting drive of the plott...he was pretty short ranged and for that he had to go.

Mine was not open at all. He could be walked in roaded by the quad or truck. and if he was in the truck he would let out a single woof not a bark to let you know he smelled one. Once he was unsnapped you didn't here from him again till he had the hog stopped.

Only opened when they were baying. If pigs break they opened for a second while in pursuit. If pig got out of sight they would shut up.

what about being gritty?
I think I covered that in my original post, He could be used as a one out dog and was an nutt dog that very rarely got cut or had a hog get away.

The one I had was totally silent until bayed, but once he opened up there was no mistaken who was there. He was pretty catchy, and would definately shut one down. If he made it to the bay and laid eyes on a hog before it broke, you were gonna catch that hog. Caught lots of hogs behind that dog that had the nuts ripped open when we got him finished. (See the pic above).
It was a shame he wouldn't step up and take a leading role. For his faults, he also had many good qualities.
