I just started a Gyp that is 18 mths, the first time in the pen she bayed opn site and caught out in about 3 minutes. In the woods she will only get out 200 yrds but it is on her own, not following a started dog. I think it is probally better to start them early, but if breed right it dont matter how old they are.

I like to start mine around 8months but some have too much puppy to hunt them till they're the age describing. You should be fine of the drive is there.

shoot i i got a yellow black mouth out of my line i gave to my dad as a yard dog 4 years ago as a pup he used to get whipped for messing with the show hogs in the pen now he is my #2 dog this is the second year hes been hunting and getting better every time i bring him out getting longer distance to already caught 15 20 by his self. so needless to say if its in them its never to late just dont give up on them.
