Break stick..........it is way easier and easier on the catch dog. no need in choking or pinching the nose or whacking him.....just use a break stick........I have been doing this a long time and have tried very brief stints of all of these back in the late 80's.....we finally whiddled a stick down where we could get it in the dogs mouth and broke them off that way....and have been using a break stick since.......now you can buy them...no whiddling skills needed....LOL......

choke a dog off?Huh?Huh?Huh?Huh???
find a cedar stick if nothing else, yes i would say there would be long lasting effects to that, not even sure i would admitt to doing that online. No i know i wouldnt admitt to doing that any place.

Make a break stick out of a deer horn do something just dont choke any more.

IF done correctly you are not actually strangling the dog off.  Just holding pressure on him untill he loses his grip.  A break stick is less time consuming but I always loose them.  Cheesy

Basicly you pull up and back on his collar with steady even pressure.  Hold the pressure until his gripp slips.

If done correctly there are no effects.  Now if you are doing something else I dont know.

Try this with one hand pull back on collar with firm pressure with other hand grab dogs flank and lift up. I don't know why but 80% bulldogs I've been around will let go. The bulldog I got now catches like a vise but you pull back on collar and grab right flank her mouth will open. I used to choke or use break stick when didn't misplace but this trick is so easy if it works on your dog?Huh?Huh?

ha ha he is more on the stubborn end. notice i didnt say how much pressure.  Grin  maybe i wasnt clear in my statement. i just cant pull him off you have to catch him the proccess of regriping. then its about having the strength to pull him back.  not when he is locked on, you would have better luck packing out the pig with the dog attached.

Big difference between choking and applying pressure............you said choking i was thinking well choking.
Heck we all have applied pressure before in some way or fashion.
Break stick is still the way to go. I make mine out of deer horn.

You can break ANY dog off this way.  Some just require a bit more time and effort. Wink  If he just pulls off, that aint rite. Wink

Yes you can...  Grin

The problem I see with break sticks is people using them incorrectly. They just shove it in and start prying.

I always lost mine... so I gave up on them. Grin

I like the break stick myself...here are some I have been useing for bout 20 years...used to use them out of oak or hickory but this teflon type material is strong yet soft on the dogs teeth.
If used right you can break one off as quick as any thing.

Someone mentioned how to use them, you must get them all the way across the dogs mouth then turn, notice on the longer stick the teeth marks far back near the handle. The shorter one used to be about 2" longer but a hod broke it lol

We have used breaksticks since we started hunting hogs..*mumbles*..years ago(mumbles = long time)
We tried a few different kinds, but then i started making my own out of a plexiglass material.
I have since changed to a slightly different textured plex, which is now stronger and still not damaging to the dogs teeth.
As far as losing them, well we had that problem as well when we first got going and between just myself and a couple hunting buddies, somebody could get rich on finding and reselling all the breaksticks we lost in the woods first couple years.
This picture here is of one i made right before going to a stronger plex, but shows the general idea of size(which i make them slightly longer as mentioned above than this particular one) and of putting the rope/snap on there to better keep track of the breakstick.  You can stick it in your back pocket and snap to your belt-loop, or i've thought of this idea as well, you can snap it to a lead you keep on you, and when you go to break the dog off you have your lead in hand too.

anywayz, just something else to ponder on this topic.

Got a year and a half dogo and been choking him off. Already has one chipped canine from choking off. It pulls on their teeth. Other than that everything has been fine but i bought a break stick. This dog wont regrip with just up and back pressure of the collar. You have to do that and then also squeeze his trachea so he cant breath and then and only then will he open his mouth a little bit. You literally have to CHOKE him off. So i figured with the tooth chipped off the top and all the struggle of getting him off i am just going to use a break stick from not on.
