 and as an american, thats the only lanuguage we should have to speak. if we move or choose to live in a country that does not speak english, then we should have to learn their language, not have to country change their ways on doing things. learn to speak the language of the land, or get the hell out. if your lived there for an extended period of time, you better know the language and use it, not your native language. when i lived in korean, i started learning the language to help me out and to move more freely around the country. i made an effort to learn their language and used it even on base with the ROK soldiers stationed there and had them tutor me. since i was ther for only a yr, of cource i wasnt fluent, but if i chose to stay there 5+ yrs, i better to be able to speak real good. if a dumb a$$ like me can pick up another lanuage, then by gosh, learn english, speak it as much as possible or get the hell out of the united states. plain and simple

I get the intent at levity.  On a more serious note, America has always been a melting pot of immigrants.  In Houston today, over 200 different languages are the primary language spoken in a home.

I went to a local elementary school last week to do a demonstration for "western day". Of the 6 classes of 1st graders, totaling 150 kids, that I spoke with, 75 of them (50%) were enrolled as ESL (English second language).  The teachers had to function as translators.

Here's some interesting reading, based on the US Census for Deer Park, TX (location of the above mentioned school)

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 28,520 people, 9,615 households, and 7,941 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,752.7 people per square mile (1,062.9/km²). There were 9,921 housing units at an average density of 957.6 per square mile (369.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.01% White, 1.31% African American, 0.41% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 5.25% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.22% of the population.

A few more numbers to chew on.

While some elementary schools in Deer Park have as many as 54% of the kids on free or reduced lunch, the district average is 37%

The median income for a household in the city was $61,334, and the median income for a family was $66,516. Males had a median income of $50,867 versus $30,926 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,440. About 4.0% of families and 5.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.4% of those under age 18 and 4.9% of those age 65 or over.

The part that I have trouble grasping, is this....   If only ~5% of the population is below the poverty line, why is it that 37% get free or reduced lunch?

And if only 15.22% of the registered population is Hispanic or Latino,why is it that 50% of the first grade class is enrolled in ESL?

Now I realize that the numbers above may not be concrete evidence of the parents being here illegally, they sure make you wonder....

In my opinion this country needs a good ol country boy with morals an common sense as a leader!!!! I think this countr need to go back to the basics, keep our nose in our own business an worry more about our people an our country than we do about everyone else's!!!!  chris, its not that are or are not legal, its that they dont give a crap to learn to speak english and dont care to get rid of that free handout. if you choose not to speak or learn to speak english with the boundries or america, then get the hell out. if our taxes have to be used to pay for bi-lingual teachers to act as translaters, then the household needs to be shipped out. if the teacher can learn to speak 2 languages, then parents of the kids and themselves should apply theirselves to learning english. when i worked on the border with ICE, i learned to speak spanish to assist with my mission of border security. i ran into 100s than didnt speak or want you to know they spoke english. again, learn to speak it, speak it all the time or get out.

English will be the primary language for all citizens in the USA...a few generations go by and most will have forgotten their native language...but as long as the illegals are coming in it will continue to be an issue for some...time will fix the language issue...

but enforcing the laws on illegal immigration needs to happen now...

I have read through this and I agree and disagree with alot of yalls statements.  I have worked in the fire service for fifteen years and have seen alot of changes.  I'll agree with Reuben I'ts the 2nd and 3rd generation that seems to be taking advantage of the "system".  I took my 3 year old son to the ER the other day and had to sit for 5 hours to get his chin sewn up.  The waiting room is full of "sick" patients, and now they have learned that if they call the ambulance they get admitted right in and get their meds and get out alot faster than driving themselves.  It's not just illegals that do this though, it's every race.  But they are adding to the problem.  A good friend of mine was talking to a farm hand one day and the hand ask him why he only had two kids.  He half jokingly said I only have two because they are so expensive.  At the time he was self employed and paying for his on insurance.  The farm hand ask really, how much did they cost you?  He told him $5000 or whatever the amount was and he said the hand looked at him funny and said really, my five didn't cost me anything.  The "theory" of the uninsured not being able to get medical care, is just that, a theory.  They go to the ER or get a ride via ambulance and it doesn't cost them a thing.  This is just one problem that I have personal experience with. 

Oh and to you anti-union folks I'm a card carrying union member.  I don't always agree with some of the suggestions that come down from the top, but for the most part they lobby for better equipment and regulations to make our job safer and more effective.  On a local level we have funds that pay people to work for you if you become injured or sick and run out of sick time.  We support each other and work for better working conditions with our city.  Last but not least as an IAFF member we CANNOT STRIKE, which is an union's main bargaining tool.  The media likes to group all unions together, and they are not all the same.

100% correct, but at what cost? the cost of pulling the rest of us down to their level for a better future that will end up in shambles? the cost of continuously allowing corrupt leaders to assist it the ruining of our country?

I don't think the "indians" had to pay for our ancestors children to get free medical benefits, free lunch, or pay for teachers to teach them in dual languages.


I have no issue at all with immigration. I just think there should be a streamlined method to letting people into the USA, issuing a visa, and give them an ID number to start paying taxes against.

I'd bet most people are just fine with immigration, it's illegal immigration they are against.

There are always jobs that we don't want to do and don't want our children to do.  It is usually done by the latest legal or illegal immigrants.  Fruit picking, garbage pick up, etc.

I was in Costa Rica at a coffee plantation.  The driver complained that they had a real problem there  ...  illegal immigration.  Turns out the Hondurans migrate there to pick the coffee beans.  It was something the driver did when he was young, now done by illegal immigrants.  I asked about his children.  They had all gone to college.  He did not want them to ever have to pick coffee beans for a living.

I guess it happens as any culture matures.

x2...100% agree...but the reality is that greed does not allow it...we need systems in place that allow for the poor to grow and become tax paying citizens...I am not saying to give hand outs but the system should not allow people to stay in a rut...the incentive for the people on government  assistance should be set up for said people to better themselves...right now these programs do not have these goals in mind...they seem to be never ending and welfare people beget more of the same...

a good example I will give is this;

a young mother is not educated for whatever reason...she has 2 kids and she is single with a very low paying job... the government provides for some of her needs...well, she figures out that if she keeps having children the help keeps coming...the system is set up to keep these folks in the system and they keep creating more of the same...so we keep paying higher taxes to supplement these government programs...the spending is never ending...because chances are some of her kids will be dependant on government help and some will probably wind up in prison...but that definitely creates income for lawyers, judges...the legal system in general...

now some will say that these folks just need to go get a job...well if you have never been real poor you just don't know...when your born into this type of system it is hard to get out of it...some do get out but it is hard to stay out of it but doable...but more often than not these folks don't get out...some may just have given up...it seems that the folks that are well off are only looking out for their children so they don't care about the poor...as long as they stay poor it just means less competition for their children...but these same folks are the same ones who talk about the poor and the programs and why don't they go out and get a job...blah blah blah...

getting back to the young mother...if the program was set up where other welfare moms can sit at home or go to a daycare and babysit welfare mom children and educate them... then we are building a good foundation for those kids...not only that but some of these welfare moms are actually earning their government assistance...and this allows some other welfare moms to go out and get a job and supplement their assistance by doing so...These moms have to pass a drug test or their assitance will be penalized...and the system will allow for a big monetary incentive to get a tubal so that they can not have any more chidren...and this is strictly voluntary...but so what if it gives 25 thousand dollars to do this... the results will pay off big in the long run...because we will have less folks on these programs...and our taxes will start to drop off as more and more citizens become productive...

just looking at the big picture as I see it...
