Breeds of cowdogs

Whats yalls favorite breed for a cowdog? I wanna get me a pup. I love the way black mouth curs work, but was wondering what yall like?

 BMC, Cats, all heeler breeds, Collies are all good for cow dogs

  It depends on wether you want dogs that get ahead and lead a set of cows while you push from behind off horseback ( Bmc or Catahoula ) or dogs that get behind and push the cows while you ride ahead ( Border Collie, Heelers, Australian shepard ). I prefer the cur and leopard types but that is what I grew up using. Some of my buddies have border collies and they are extremely smart.

I agree with Lance but i think the border collie can do just about anything you want him to as long as your patient but that aint taking nothing away from other breeds. The border collie is just what i prefer ,mainly because of how smart they are.

I like bmc.  Get ahead and lead, lots of hunt to em.  Extremely smart.  Can do anything u ask of them.  Some good lines up there in ok where ur at.

as above..what exactly are you wanting your dog to do .are you intending to run a team. what type of stock do you intend to move just like a pig dog there are very specific breeds for each purpose and within breeds different vairiations.eg.boarder collie[ heading ] will bring back towards you [hunt] to move away to bark or silent [the silent will almost always have beed bred to head' usually used for sheep or deer.for the likes of bulls i prefer a dog that has alot of noise and hunt over a dog that heals as i find they tend to flow alot better but these are stock that are worked alot stubborn bush bulls may need somthing alot harder eg red or blue healer these prefer to run on there own or in a very small pac as they are renoun one man dogs.

buck i know a kid out your way that had about 40 blackmouths, cats, and crosses between the two. they mind like a good border collie. we caught lots of cows and we didnt even have to chase any hardly. we DO chase one down every once in a while.... gotta keep us entertained but we could just walk up and pitch our rope on them

Another one is the hangin tree cowdog its a workhorse but kinda of hard to get your hands on. There a mix of a border collie heeler and aussie i think theyll bite both ends and do what ever you want em too. i dont to much about other that and every one ive seen are good working dogs.

I agree with the other guys just depends what you need them to do, what kind of cattle your working and what kind of country your in.  I have BMC and really like them.  They hunt, get ahead and get rough when they need too.

if you decide to try border collies, i will hook you up with an old man near uvalde that has the best around.  he sells pups to the people that do the national competitions and win.  they are the real deal, smart as a whip, and will do what ever you tell them.  ive seen them get sent from the house to get sheep, go over 3 miles, bring the sheep in and pen them, work cattle & get rough, and seen them catch a good boar when he tells them.  may be the best blood line of collies in the US.  and he isnt a dog trader, if he dont like them at 6 weeks, they dont get sold.  but, at the same time, he just took a bmc pup off of me.  said he has a soft spot for them!

iv seen border collies do amazing things. border collie is the smartest dogs in the dog world, i cant imagine there being a better base to start with. smartest breed is a pretty big plus

I use cowdogs all the time. I have seen all sorts work. Love to watch any dogs work. If your are working pastures and small section of wood collies, hanging tree, aussies, and kelpies are the best. Now if you are working brush, big timber or big country .cur dog is the best.. There  is no place around here for no blue heeler at all.
