Sorry,  I accidently posted this in the dogs on hog section but I meant for it to go here..

This weekend I picked a new dog on trial. He is supposed to be a full blood Florida Cur. I have always been interested in  cur dogs but have never hunted or been around one so I was wondering what some of you guys thought about him as far as the way he is put together..
He is 4years old and suppose to be a one out type dog, he hunts short rang and will wind or take hot track and catch, so far he has been kinda slow but he hasnt been hunted in 8months and is a little out shape. I have hunted him twice the first time we didn't get in anything and the second time Tuff and Penny struck and he went to Tuff who had caught a shoat and then they both went to penny who had about a 100lbs sow bayed up about 300yds off.
I have got a little while before I have to make a decision on keeping him around so I plan on getting him back into shape and see how much that helps with his performace..I think him and Tuff would make a nice two dog team if I could ever get him to turn it on.

Here is duke...

4yr old Duke and 19 month Tuff

They held with sow this morning for about 10min before we got to them

Thanks for the compliments on the cur dogs...

Hoping to get Duke into the woods as much as possible this week..so far he has been a really easy dog to get along with. He's got really good handle and gets Ali.g great with the other dogs. Hopefully he will turn it on in the woods!

Haven't hunted much with the gsp, but he has struck a couple hogs for the guy who owns him...he's a real busy dog on the woods and will rip the nuts off of a runner

He definately has that South Florida look to him.  Be careful about runnin him with another catchy dog.  Most of the Fl Curs ive hunted with will flat out catch anything with another dog even if the other doesnt catch.

Where did you get him from?  MOst of the guys i hunt with wont run more than two dogs ont he ground so everything dont get killed.  try runnin him one out and see if it helps.

Thanks for the input..Ive got him on trial from a friend of mine who was hunting/selling him for another guy that I don't know. The guy and my friend nigh run loose baying dogs so really didn't have much need for him.

I have a ybmc dog "Tuff" the other dog in the vest in the pics above who is pretty much straight catch on any size hog..only time I have seen him bay is when the hog so deep in the briars he can't see him or if it is a big group of hog rallying. I have started running Tuff as a one out dog but have been looking for another good catchy cur to run with him! The way I see it there are two ears on a hog might as well catch em both.

Kinda looks a bit like some of Mark Chesser's stuff, but if you don't know who the dog came from who knows what it is...

Doesn't scream out FL cur to me, but there is a lot of varience in the "breed",  much easier for me to spot one that "is" than one that "might be" if you know what I mean

I was thinking the same thing Noah, my friends run a lot of them down here in west palm and they look different than this one. Still a great looking dog tho. And if he hunts good who cares what he is lol.

I know what you mean Noah...

I just talked to the guy I got him from and he says the dog did come from Florida and is out of a known bloodline he just couldn't remember the name. He is going to check doth the original owner of the dog and get back to me.

I'll try an put some examples up in a bit, but I had to laugh when I saw those pictures from dodgegirl... hahaha... man, that "dome-head" look shows STRONG in them dogs...lol... dead ass give away for a FL bred dog...  Partin dogs show this REAL strong.... round, muscled head... big "doe" eyes... the old school Florida "meat-heads" definitely have a "look" to them.... making genetic testing quite unneccessary  Grin

I tell you what my dad said levi" the older looking dog" was one of the best dogs he's ever had the the chance to hunt behind. He hunted till the day he died. He was 14 yrs old. We have lots of pups off of him & hopefully they will turn into half the dog old man levi was.

The head on a Florida Cur is usually a dead give away... as well as plenty of scars lol...

Partin Cur(good one)

Do you see the "meat" on the black dog's head?  Grin

Chit hog, but notice the shape of the head...  Wink

Note the "raw-boned" character of frame... very sturdy built dogs... "built to take a lickin'"  Wink Grin

... again.... note the "meat de la cabeza" hahaha...  Grin

... and.... my FAVORITE Florida Cur...  Wink  My Shiner dog...  Smiley
