T.wil he will work a couple hundred yards around me and stay real busy when i walk hunt him. I did nothing but walk hunt when i was starting him and the time he spent at mr masons he was walk hunted. That may be why he is the way he is now?? Catahoulas seem to be the black sheep on this board second to dogos. So i thought i would brag a little on mine. The milwakees beast lite had me last night or that post probably would not have been written Wink

It ain't cause we don't like cats. Cause I do like them. I think its cause they have been pettled all over the country for there flashy color.

Well I guess I throw my Yeller dog under the bus too then!!  Grin

She hunts about the same.. When we road her she usually stays within 150 yards infront of the wheeler until she gets in sign...
Walk hunting she gets out alittle more and hunts better buts shes consistent either way, so she works for me..  Wink

But she is yeller so that still makes her better than yours..  Tongue

Go get you some Miller Lite and that might not have happened... lol Just sayin...  Wink

LOL! That's great!  Grin

But seriously, do ya'll think that is cause they are hunting FOR you and not for THEM??? Cause they both will strike a hog and finish it out right? Does the fact that they will only get out 200ish yards hunting make them less of a dog?

I don't think so, but that's JMO...

I think mine hunt short range and hunt for me... I watched my cat on the garmin today trail one off a water hole about 400 yards and bark a few times and as soon as the other dogs got there you could hear a shoat getting caught. I guess he rolled out on momma, boo ran the hog a little over a mile until he crossed a pipeline then he lost it or quit it. I dont know if bottom will come with more age but it is pretty aggravating to see him quit. he is a hair over 2 years old now.  But what aggravates me more is to have three other dogs sitting by the ranger while the sorry catahoula is finding and running a hog by himself. I like the fact he has enough drive to keep huntin when the other dogs have stopped. All in all he made me proud again today just by being the only dog to strike one and the only dog still hunting at 11:00 am in this heat. he is by no means a super star but he tries.

I'll tell ya my experience has been that the most talented ones I've seen have been dull black ones or black and tan.

Not saying there's no good high performance leopards out there by any means, I just haven't seen many of the leops that I've liked.

Here is the two I've inherited. I likem.

My leopard throws black pups does that make her talented.Ive heard the black one supposed to be better workers but its probably because noboby wants to pay for the black pups and they got to get ajob .The pretty spotted dogs got other options kinda like life.

I think your exactly right, from what I've seen, people cut more slack to the pretty ones whereas the darkies had better do something impressive.

It doesn't amount to much and people may think I'm full of it but the best Catahoulas I've seen and hunted behind have all had solid colored eyes or glass flecks in em.

Like I said not much to it but I've noticed it with every real good dog I've seen.

T-Bob I like that Bo dog you got there. I feel the key is to finding a strain/bloodline that has proven parents/grandparents that will flat out Hunt.. my buddy has a red catahoula that will stay out 400-500 yards and flat out get it done. There are culls in every breed plain and simple. I have noticed also that the leopard ones seemed to be kept as pets and told how pretty they are , and the solids ive seen hunt well. They one i had was a good dog hunted around 300 yards until he hit a fresh sign but he was stolen last year. I have alot of  Cat. breeders on my facebook that ive talked about purchasing one of there pups and i ask how do the parents hunt? and there answer is they are Beautiful. I will be getting a male  with good bloodlines from proven parents soon that im lookin forward to gettin in the woods   Smiley
