too dang hot!

heat index of 105 and a dang heat wavy come through me n boarboy made a quick round needless to say it was a dry run. There was no water at the place and I guess no pigs! It sucked!

Shoot, right now I'd love a heat index of 105. It was 110 here in NE OK today, and I dont even know what the index was.

Here is our forecast for the next few days....and I imagine for the next month.

yea got to hot we went back to the truck and my lead dog "doc" decided to role out guess he was lookin for another heat stroke but i got him call of found a government land road to drive and see if they would wind anything but they didnt so i came back home

Shoot been 70 degrees here the last 2 mornings when I get in the truck at 6 630. Anything under 80 is good for me if there is water around.

I dont understand people that sacrafice there dogs to try to hunt in this heat , give the hogs and your dogs a break , they will still be there when it cools off ,

its our dogs and i didnt run ours if you watch your dogs and know them you know that they will not be stupid and kill there dumb self. you have to know which dogs has brains and know when to quit one.

I havent yet have one stroke out of heat and ive hunted all summer. morning and night!

But i know my dogs better than anyone else and i can tell when there done and ready to go

plus you catch more bc the hogs get caught and dont move as much and just lay up in water

While it is hot, I don't consider it sacraficing the dogs. I expect them to be conditioned and able to hunt year round. Some places that we hunt will be become someone elses place to hunt if you give the pigs a break. I won't fault anyone for not hunting while it's hot, we each hunt the way we want, but a dog that overheats on a typical summer night is a dog that I don't need. As always, conditioning is key, if they are used to it they can handle it.

If you don't want to hunt because it is hot don't. But don't trash people that are tougher than you. I have not had a dog have a heat stroke and I hunt in the summer. My whole life I have worked dogs year round without any problem. I am not telling anybody to do it but don't tell people not too. Bob I think you have stated your opinion a few times. Nobody asked you to understand. I wish a/c would be outlawed so people that can't take the heat would move somewhere else.

I believe this was the best answer so far. Dogs must be conditioned.  Using dogs in the heat is a business for me.  Whether i am hog hunting, or catching cattle.  Landowners expect you to rid or control the population of hogs.  Cattle are bought and sold year round.  So my dogs are used.  Yes from time to time they may get too hot, just like me or my horses, or cattle we are moving.  But here is the kicker.  As a responsible animal owner you must know how to treat this, and be ready.  I still work in the heat, i cant afford to take off 6 months of the year in texas.  You also have to look at this two ways.  First the heat, but second the cold.  When you bay a hog in the freezing water and the dog is hot from running it there is the chance for hypothermia.  Summer Heat/Winter Cold.  I work in both and so will my critters.

X's 2, if 74-78 is too hot for the poor little dogs to hunt then GET RID OF EM!!!........I think that its a good excuse because some PEOPLE don't like hunting in the heat. Its all about conditioning......if you leave your dogs on a chain or in a kennel for weeks at a time with no work then they aren't goin to perform well in the heat.

I can honestly say that out of every hogdogger I know in the my area not a single 1 is staying at home cuz its to hot for the dogs, a couple of the older guys are stayin at home cuz they don't wanna deal with the heat but as for 95% of em they are still loading up and hunting!!!

Just keep the internal fat out of your dogs year round and keep them in good running shape and you will be fine.  People just don't understand internal fat because you cannot see it .

One other thing you want to find out really what kind of dog you got hunt him in the heat it will tall the tell .  The heat will bring out any kind of BS thats in him thats for sure.  I love hunting in the middle of summer myself .
