I guess this is just he independent voting contrariarn in me, but I was glad to see Cruz defeat Dewhurst.

I think all politicians are bad.  They line their pockets and blow smoke up our butts.  Dewhurst seems like a nice enough fellow, but I really hate the way politicians que up and march like ants up the power pole.  There are only 2 parties and they keep everyone in line.  Do what the party says or they will push you out of your elected position.  Dewhurst was dancing to that tune.  Political parties are fickle.  They take positions not based on what they believe, but based on tactics to stop their opponents.  One month they are against something because someone else is for it  ...  the next month they flip flop and take the opposite position.  They expect "their" rank & file politicians to follow their lead.

I really wish there was a strong 3rd party in this country.

I really have no idea who Cruz is or what he will do once elected.  I like that he has never held an elected office.  That gives him a chance to represent us and not a party.  He can vote independently without a political party pulling his strings.  While I will likely not like his voting on social issues, I am hopeful he will be frugal and conservative on fiscal issues.  Dewhurst would have simply done what his party told him to do.  So whether Cruz turns out to be good or bad, at least he is different.  Then again, I used this same logic when I voted for Carter (surely a farmer would do better) and Perot (nobody's puppet)  ...  and that didn't work out too good.  Still, I'm optimistic.

After I hit the "post", a thought occurred to me.  I should state that I did NOT vote yesterday.  Yeah, I know lots of you give me grief over my views, but I am an independent.  I have never voted in primaries and I do not care to align myself with either political party  ...  even for a day.

Yesterday my wife, Mandi, called both Cruz and Dewhurst's offices.  Without saying how she felt about the issue, she asked one question, "How do you feel about Humane Society of the US aka HSUS"

The aid at Cruz office was very quick to explain that they do not agree with HSUS or their tactics. He explained that he (the aid) personally worked to fight HB 1451 last year, and if Cruz is elected that he will be traveling to Washington with Cruz.

The aid at Dewhurst's office put her on hold, then came back after talking to another aid and told her that "Dewhurst is a rancher, so he is against animal cruelty"

Prior to her phone call, I was leaning toward voting for Cruz, however, I was torn between voting for a rancher, or a lawyer....

After the phone call to Dewhurst's office, I figured out he's not a rancher, just a politician.

Cruz got my vote.

I would have never though to do that. I love Mandi's tactic! Very smart.

Won't be the first time a politician has lied... But, at least Cruz office took a stance, without knowing who was on the other end of the phone.   Dewhurts's office just came up with some BS non-committal statement.  Kinda like they didn't know who was on the other end of the phone, so they weren't going to state a position.

Cruz may not be the perfect person but its a good sign. Donna Campbell also won so it looks like people are sending a pretty clear message to the career politicians. Alot of them aren't bad but you have to flush these politicians out pretty often to keep them on their toes. Even the best will go down hill after being there a while.

career politicians

They sell their souls to the "D or R party".  They usually need the "parties" for their infrastucture and money.  Soon, they represent the party, not the electorate.

I don't mind someone voting for or against something opposite of the way I would prefer.  I hate it when they do that because the "party" mandated it to them.

I am liberal on social issues but I hope Cruz votes against every dollar proposed for unnecessary liberal and conservative projects.  I oppose funding for arts, entertainment, feel good advertising, HSUS, athletic teams, etc. I oppose using public bonds to fund private enterprise.  If left to either party, they will rail against "Washington" and still spend every dollar they can on anything the party or its donors want.

Maybe Cruz will be a trend.  Maybe the Tea Party can become a legit party.  It will probably have to break away to do that  ...  but essentially that is what happened with Cruz anyway.  He went against the party and still won.  Good job.

Im curious how you came to that conclusion?

I deal with a fair amount of people who have wealth. Never have I met one that was trying to hold me back. In fact its quite the opposite.

eric, do the rich people you deal with  buy the lobyists and politicians? mid 1800s-early 1900s rich families have the money to influence the government and lobyists more than the current rich bc their names are well known for gov ties

I think there is a big difference between these people advancing their personal business asperations and saying they are trying to keep you... Or make you poor. No one is trying to keep or make you poor by lobbying the govt.

The middle class is the wealthy business person's bread and butter. Poor people cant buy goods and services. I dont they want to do away withe the middle class.

Two of the biggest lobbying groups are agriculture and pro guns (NRA). Its kind of the pot calling the kettle black.
