I have a almost 1 1/2 old dogo-pit catch dog. He swims like a ROCK! He has almost drown on several occasions.
vested or not doesnt matter, he still cant swim at all.
His front legs paddle enough to barely keep his head above water, but the rest of him just sinks.

Well, yesterday evening it happened again. Dogs were all bayed tight & helping my 1 catch gyp on a rough 230# sow, while this dog was drowning. I went to the bay to help the dogs, so my wife went to save the dog. didnt think the pond was that deep, got worried real quick when I saw wife struggling to stay above water & help the dog that was now going under. She got ahold of a log, made it to the shore, & they were both ok. Wife was just really out of breath.

My question is:  can this dog be taught to swim somehow?

Don't know about learning to swim. Don't think it's a learned response in dogs. My catch dog is same way. Feet/legs moving trying to swim but starts sinking. Rear end first, then body, then shoulders, then nose, lol. I think it must have to do with body/muscle density, size of paws (mine has small paws), something.

muscle is heavier than fat, and it floats like a rock. buy him some doggy flippers and keep him in the water Grin
in all seriousness, as halfbreed said, take him to a known shallow pond and get with him and swim with him. he will either sink or swim in the end.

I used to just put mine in the pool with me and grab their tail. They learn to kick and swim and if it goes south I am there.

just dont cut em loose into a tank problem solved either push the hogs out of the tank or go it and wrestle with it your self lol! i never cut my catchdogs to a pig in a tank unless they the pigs are standing on the very edge of the tank if the pigs are out in the water swimming we just tie the catch dogs up n go in and grab em!
