The other night a couple of my dogs struck about 500 yd out and were hammering away but steadily moving ahead. It sounded like a settled bay but they covered about 300 yd like that just at a walk. I never got close enough to turn a cd loose and the pig left the country. I have had it happen once before and didn't catch that one either. Tell me about your experiences like this and what kind of hog it was if you caught it.

We have them in sudan are a pin in the butt if your cd aint experienced. Seen them a couple times in the woods always a good hog. Big enough the dogs know not to mess with him so he just walks.

Also forgot to add if you can get ahead of the hog and dogs and let him come to you easier sometimes than going in behind.

Most of the time it is a good rank hog that does this.

I've had this a few times. It has ALWAYS been a big rank boar hog in some really thick country. I like to think the bay dogs are smart enough to know when to hold them and know when to let them walk.

My dogs probably are culls, but I'll keep feeding them until I find some real hog dogs. Lol I figure it's a rank one, we have bayed 3 times in the same area in the last couple of weeks and gotten the slip. Turned CDs to it once and the pig broke when they hit and came by us with several dogs on his butt and never checked up. It was a dang big hog. He always runs to some crp land that a rabbit can't get through. Maybe I'll cull my dogs and start over and I'll bet I'd catch him right off.

Matt and I sent two catch dogs to one a few hundred yards out. Turned out to be a no eared boar in a bad thicket... the outcome wasn't very pretty.
That was the last time I sent bulldogs from a distance.

It happens.
Either let the dogs stay on him till they finnsly settle in together or get to em faster and catch that hog. I don't ride a horse very well at all and don't hunt off of one either, but that's soon to change, for this among other reasons. I figure if I can keep up with them better, and get to them faster, then that's better for the dogs, the hogs and me too. If a horse is a possibility for you, have you tried it out yet?

Now them dogs have heart. Those I'd feed. My point was that I want my curs to attempt to stop any hog, hanging on him when necessary. If the hog is allowed to walk untouched, my rough curs are not doing their job.

By the time they reach 5 to 6 months, I've got a pretty good idea of which dogs are going to be "rough" enough to work for me By that age, my dogs will have had multiple oppurtunities to have proven themselves "in the woods".

T-Bob, I prefer hunting horseback. You are right about it being a lot faster getting to the bay. Unfortunately around here the properties are so small it makes it hard to get around all the fences. Mike, I learned about not turning the CDs loose until the bay is settled and I am in close proximity the hard way too. Not on a no eared boar but a rank one by myself. One cd lost an eye and I'm lucky he didn't have good teeth or I would have been minus some dogs.

Well heck I still have yet to hunt off of a horse. I'm anxiously waiting for a few minor details to shift in life and then BAM I'm all in.

That was the last time I sent bulldogs from a distance.
To this day will not send a bulldog from a distance on a moving bay because of that. I have seen it too many times especially if the dogs are baying hard it is usually a good hog. Sometimes he stops sometimes not but Ive seen the walking bay plenty.
