X2 That is way better than a doctor or lawyer like I was thinking.

What kind of work do you want to do? I personally like working in the plants and I make good money for a 21 year old but I work hard and I work a lot. If you can handle the shift work and tons of hours the plant is a good place to be.

If you dont have any formal training or college. Then working in the plant is for you. Sometime you end up working a lot of hrs but its worth it. Youll probably start off at around $14 an hour almost anywhere as a helper. You have to look at the long term. Are you a bumb or not? Do you want to make a career out of what you are doing or just trying to have a job because your dads on your ass? Are you willing to pay for your own training to move up or are you just going to settle for what they give you and stay on your tools forever and never move up? Just a few questions you should ask yourself.
Personally I'm not a bumb. I went to college because my dad was on my butt about it. I had a full time job I like and decided I wanted to make a career out of it and I did. Finished my certificate in welding technology at a junior college. Paid for some national recognized certifications and now I just work 40 hrs a week because I have put myself in a position where I can afford all I want and need off of 40hrs. I think the first full year out of high school I worked I made about 40k and that was working a lot of overtime. Every year since then I have increased my salary by 10k a year and still going.
I'm a equipment inspector in so we basically make sure that all the piping and vessel in a chemical plant are in good enough condition to operate and tell the client how long they will be able to operate. You can start off as a NDE or NDT Tech. and work you way up the pay scale pretty fast.

To add to what R Schmidt said decide if you want to work for a plant or be a contractor. There's pros and cons to both. I personally like working for a plant because I know where I'm going to report to work every day and it gives you quite a bit of stability. However some guys like working at different places regularly and you can make an ass load of money in a few months time if you work a shutdown.

If I could start adulthood over, I'd lease a pasture and build out one of the metal sheds to live in. Id never have a "job" but try to always keep work.

I would go in to some kind of trade like a mechanic... change flats... some thing service oriented that is fairly simple. Then I would get a big sign that said CASH ONLY.... or CASH DISCOUNTS.

I got a girl pregnant in 04 after my first semester of college and had to do something to support the kid I started in 04 @$9.42 with a contractor in the plants . They paid for my trade school. 2years later I finished trade school and got married to that girl. I was at $25 from 06-09 5 years in the trade I got hired by a plant in 09 @25.85 and just topped out last week at 37.25 The money is in the plants. 2-3 year trade schools are cheap and it doesnt take that long to climb the pay scale. I am a Millwright by trade. Millwright or Instrument and Electrician are two paths that will always keep you with a job. These two are dying trades with alot of older fellas looking to retire soon. 4-10's cant be beat either. You just have to figure out what you want to do, and what has the most demand. Either you want to succeed or you want to collect a check. Your attitude determines your altitude
