I got a stray dog that I want to trap. There is no way I can get close enough to dart or catch him, nor am I gonna ever be able to get him to settle down enough to sucker him into a pen... What are y'all suggestions? I'm thinking a live trap would work great, but how do I find one big enough?

Um, guys, I live in town... What's the smallest hog trap I can get? I wonder if I could just find someone to lend me one for a  few days since I just need to catch this dog. He is a very good lookin Catahoula dog with double glass eyes. I thought he belonged to someone but have put the word out everywhere and he's been hanging around here for almost 3 months. I throw him a bowl of dog food out every night and he sleeps under my horse trailer but when I drive up or step outside he freaks and takes off before I can even get the door shut.

Then leave him IN the trailer for long enough so he don't eat you
Up when you go to grab him. Or just Hual the trailer to wherever your thinking on going with him.

Guys, I'm not trying to be argumentative but y'all don't understand. I've been feeding this dog for 3 MONTHS and still can't get within a football field from him. He watches me from across my neighbors pasture when it's supper time, but won't come up until I'm gone. I've tried the trailer but I can't get a rope to work that is long enough to pull from inside the house and if he so much as hears my front door creak he is on the run again.

Terry, not planning on going anywhere with him. I'd like to have him if he will make a dog or even a good pet. He is gorgeous. Otherwise I'll cull him. Better than gettin splattered on the highway behind me.

They make a snare trap called a collarum. Very effective, and won't hurt him in the least. Basically a spring loaded yoke, with a large diameter cable snare placed on it. Instead of downward pressure like a foot trap, it goes off when something pulls on the trigger. This activates the spring, and the yoke slings the snare around his head. Has a stop on the cable so it wont choke the dog  The animal control over here uses them, and they work very good for some pretty wild dogs. They use chicken leg bones tie wrapped to the trigger. I am sure you can pick them up from a trapping supply place somewhere. Gonna have to make you a noose pole to get him out though.

My animal control office has a dof trap that is the size of a dog carrier (pet mate dog crate).  I used it before to catch a dog; call them and ask them if they have one you can borrow.

We had a stray dog come up about two years ago.  He's some sort of red heeler Cur dog cross.  Pretty well built dog and not bad looking.  We haven't laid hands on him since he's come to the house, and we've tried everything.  So far he's made a great yard dog for strangers, he bays cows well, and usually runs the deer outta the garden by the house.  He don't even have a name besides dog or stray.

I'd imagine a coyote trap with some real good stinky bait in a quite covered up location could do the trick....

Just great!! Another nincompoop wanting a Retarded catahoula because they are " gorgeous "

You should probably save your time, money, and possibly some fingers and give him lead poisoning..
If you were closer I would do it for you, just for the fun of culling another chiteater!!!

Just kidding Meagan...  angel

Hold on now. I said IF he makes a dog ill keep him cuz he is gorgeous. I don't mind culling a pretty dog anymore than an ugly one if they are a piece of crap.

On a side note, I plan on asking city animal if I can borrow a trap tomorrow.
