Just some advice. Dont run started or puppies with your open dog or it could mess them up. Only run finished dogs that know to find their own hog.

How does it mess them up?

IMO, my puppies run to a bark because they think a dog has found the hog, so they initially quit hunting because they think the "fun" has started. I think you want each dog to independantly find their own hog, that is why I said it COULD mess them up. I also know that there are many people that may disagree with me and have hunted a lot longer than I have.

Not being a smart a%& but doesn't that defeat the purpose of having silent dogs?

Not being a smart a%& but doesn't that defeat the purpose of having silent dogs?

Most silent dogs don't have as good a nose as hound , the hounds can take older track get it worked out an then the cur dogs will be able to run it after they figure out how to work with the hound ,

But I will tell you some hounds will make them cur dogs have to hustle they can move a track an get a hog set down too ,

They whole silent sneak up on hog is a little over rated , I think if the hog gonna run he gonna run no matter what dog trailing him an he gonna stop an bay when he wants to , now if you got a basset hound out there not movin the track ok I can see the hog running an taking for ever to get bayed but if you got a dog moving the track an no boohooing around then he gonna put some heat on the hog an make him bay sooner or later ,

You can't teach a dog not to open on track but some dogs learn that they will be running a track an sometimes they will shut up an flat out be flying trying to catch what ever game they after

no it wont make the pups open...my main dog is a black and tan...she opens and gets any dogs that stay behind to bust out and get to her...by the time they do that they pick up the track too..this happens with all my dogs..not sure about others. heck running her with my silent dogs is actually making her more silent hahaha

Thanks for all the advise.. it. Seems to me that hunting a open dog would be ideal for young pups that's ain't turning it on yet... cause the open dogs gonna bark when he smells the hog.. then hopefully the pups will go to him and pick up on the race. Compared to a silent dog that may not bay up for hundreds yards maybe more jmo

I have a dog that yips when she finds the trail and then shuts up and yips when she sees the hog is a rough gritty bay dog otherwise I sent her out with another long range strike dog and my RCD they ended up striking 2 different ways and turned into a long night. I havent hunted them all together enough yet to see if they honor each other.

Gonna disagree on this one. I have silent plotts as silent as any cur. Have catahoula yella dogs etc. I put a black and tan that barked on track and my cat and my plotts started opening on track so yes it does effect them IMO. To her out of the equation and 2 hunts later all my dogs went back to silent. This being said my plott is 11 yrs old and my cat 4 are all finished. So its not like they arent set in their ways

in some cases iv had a pup or to open up cause of a load mouth hound and had it happen to lots of buddy's pups do the same so u might want to keep an eye on them young dogs. But if ur raising a plott pup around silent dogs it can make them closed mouth or a lil bit quieter depends on the dog

I know there is a myth out there that a hound will outstrike a cur dog.....However, if the dogs are in the woods, are you just assuming the hound struck the hog because he fired up first? That isnt a fair comparision. I have seen hounds bark on track, going backwards on track, when the cur dogs went the right way on the track and were silent......I still say to not run puppies that you want to be silent with a open mouth dog, and from what easttexasoutlaw sais, they will get a finished dog to bark on track too just because of the excitement. However, and old dog will go back to his old ways a few hunts later.

Im not going on belief im going on actually watching it happen with my own eyes so may not have happened to other people but it did me. No she wasnt ahead of them. The hound myth is not a myth in my opinion i have seen yella dogs cats etc outstrike a hound but general our hounds pick up a track before our curs

east tex it just depends on the track they will all strike a hot track together  . it's them old tracks that a cur dog is not inclined to take . they can smell it , but will pass on it to find a hotter trail . but the hound will strike that same track and grub it out till it warms up  .
