Most silent dogs don't have as good a nose as hound

So does this mean a silent hound doesn't have as good of a nose as a open hound??  Grin

I meant cur dogs by silent , but from what I have been noticing most hounds that are silent tend to have hotter nose , but may not be the case on every dog just the majority of the ones I have seen they may not be barking much working up a cold track but when it gets hot they usally are goin to give some mouth

east tex it just depends on the track they will all strike a hot track together  . it's them old tracks that a cur dog is not inclined to take . they can smell it , but will pass on it to find a hotter trail . but the hound will strike that same track and grub it out till it warms up  .

I had an open dog (plottXcur) hunt with a silent dog and every now and then the silent dog would let out a few barks. That was the last time I hunted them together. The way I see it is if you want silent dogs hunt them with other silent dogs. There are always exceptions but I don't want a trail barker nor do I want to possibly encourage it. Just to be safe it's silent all the way for me.

I personally won't run my dogs with open dogs.

i know an old man 67yrs to be exact that hunts with walkers bmc and he never runs a bmc pup with a semi or open hound cause he says it will teach the curr to be open on track and you want the curr to come out not the hound part idk about adult dogs but if you want a silent dog from my experience dont run a pup with an open dog unless you want it picking up bad habits, when he trains his hounds to be silent on track he runs them with the currs one at a time to see whos gonna be open and whos not kinda how he explained it to me its going against a hounds nature to be silent they r naturally semi to open and currs are semi to silent and an open hound will bring out the semi open of a curr or cat vise versa i think i got that right

A real good hound is hard to beat, open or silent, but he has to have it all with nose and track speed. They are out there.

BUT there is Cur dogs with noses as good as at hound and will flat out make a hound look silly on an old track making you wonder whats so special about your cold nosed hound dog.

I've seen some cold, COLD nosed red cur dogs that can do this. We have a little bit of everything, one dog is open while trailing, most give some to ALOT of mouth once the hog breaks and runs, & the rest are silent. Running open and silent together does not matter

sometimes a pup that falls behind will open up...seems like they do this because they are getting tired and they know they can't keep up...sometimes they get hung up at a creek or get stuck in the thick briars and they go to barking...

Some observations I have seen since I have been hunting. I started hoghunting when I was 18. I am 57 now. I started with curs but we had a importation of Russian hogs that came from Tx. When we got them I noticed how much longer the races were altho some of our feral hogs could run like a bat out of hell to.
The cur dogs I had were silent but when we started getting these all day races, I started getting plotts. I have had both all these years & ran them together all the time. The open mouth plotts never made my curs open & by the same token, the silent dogs never made the plotts shut up.lol It is hereditary & when u breed a open dog to a silent dog it can go either way but I do think opening on track is a more dominant gene.
I have had curs with a nose as good as any coldnose hound out there but they are rare. In fact my criteria for keeping a hound is he better have a better nose then the curs.
Some of these long races are simply caused by to many dogs on the ground that make the hog break. One or two dogs out & u will bay way more hogs then a pack. They either have to be tough enough to catch him & hold him or back off & bay. JMO & might not be the opinion of the viewing audience.
Bottom line  whether a cur of hound, the good ones rise to the top & will get bayed somewhere.
