To say a lot happened on this hunt would be an extreme understatement...  So much became "understandable" during, and after, this hunt than I may be able to adequately describe... as well, there is much that we all are still trying to comprehend.  Very interesting.

The hunt was set up specifically to test my "young" dogs, Whaler, Sawfish, and Spinner, to see what was what.  To see if any were worthy of breeding potential.  I knew it going in and the pressure was on.

Whaler and Sawfish did not dissapoint.

Whaler Boar, bayed up solo, caught by "Petie"  the bulldog(hell of a dog)

Sawfish boar, bayed solo, caught by Petie

Got to get some sleep, I will try to add to this post tomorrow

Twice now, I have written detailed story of this hunt... and TWICE I have managed to lose it all from power loss  Angry  ... I will take this as a sign and move on.

Vid of one of Whaler's hogs from the wknd

Mean lil' ba$tard Whaler bayed up, barred him, and when I went to turn him loose... the sombitch actually came up the tree I had jumped in and tried to pull me out HAHA  Grin  He got me all the way around my calf, when I heard the rip, I said to myself, "self, this can't be good"  Grin... Meanwhile.... Grin  My buddy Fred was about a hundred yds away laughing about me gettin' chewed on HAHAHA... Grin.... about that time... that ol' boar hog got tired of chewin' on me, and heard "the laughter" LOL... spit me out and I CHIT YOU NOT... turned and ran like a damn lazer through the brush ALL THE WAY TO FRED HAHAHA   Grin  ... I heard the boar woof at him as he tried to hook Fred, then I heard the "thud sound" as ol' Fred bounced off a tree tryin' to get out of the way HAHAHA  Grin  ...bruised, but he was lucky he didn't get cut too!!!!  Grin

Their dogs bayed this good sow up out in tall grass, when I got in there to catch her... I could hear a big hog growling at us and it was a spooky feeling to say the least.  Shined my light over and saw a big, big boar standing 15' from us watching... trying to make his mind up...  there was no where to go.   Finally the others showed up and we managed to bluff him off and catch the sow, was an intense few moments!!

Hahahaha......I guess we'll have to call that hog y'all cut a 'tree' hog wouldn't you say? I mean, he did tree you and your buddy. I wonder if he's silent on track? Glad you came out of this faily unscathed buddy.....I'd hate to lose you before we even get to hunt together....lol So did y'all use any of 'their' dogs at all or only yours? Just curious what they had.

I got to see probably 15 different dogs work, mostly what I would consider "grove dogs" or "grass patch dogs",  hot nosed, short range, rough dogs.  They tried dropping their dogs down with mine(which I was not real keen on lol) but pretty much every time, their dogs would fall out real quick and mine would take over at that point.

Only 2 dogs down there stood out to me that I am very fond of, brother and sister by the same stud dog as Whaler/Sawfish/Spinner.   The male is young but turning into a fine dog... Big, good lookin' leopard almost identical in build and hunting style as Whaler.  Real neat dog, I would LOVE to breed him to my Shiner gyp if I can talk him into it  Grin  The female is one of the most amazing wind dogs I have ever seen, I mean if there is a hog within' a mile, this bitch can wind it... crazy good.  It appears that the "Willy" stud dog to all these dogs was throwing some strong traits, very constistently.  It's a shame he's dead now, as we would dang sure like to make the cross again... but hopefully with these sons we can do something.

What I learned this wknd...  I am very hard headed(as all my close friends will agree  Grin), having said that, I thought I knew what I had going into this wknd.  I knew I had three "solid" dogs, and I thought I knew best how to hunt them...  I was WRONG  Grin

About halfway through the second night, it became obvious that Whaler and Sawfish had become a far measure better than their mother Shiner.  The guys we were hunting with hunt to sell hogs and they figured out real quick which dogs produced lol...  Whaler and Sawfish both have unbelievable drive/stamina, they just kept on going... and going... and going.  Shocked  Even I was impressed as I had not had the opportunity to push them that hard before.  It did feel very strange to leave what I thought was my "best" dog(Shiner) in the box, but the boys just move a track much faster than her, and get much rougher to stop one than she does.  Was very eye opening.

... the next thing I learned  Grin...

I do not have the appropriate catch dog for the style of bay dogs I hunt.  Many times during the hunt, one of my dogs would bay a hog up and I would want to send a second dog to them to provide more "distraction" so the CD could get an easier shot...  I was told real quick, "no"  Grin, "let's just go catch the hog"... sounded too simple, but it damn sure worked!!!  They use a bulldog named Petie that is about 60#'s of whoop ass lol.. no vest, no cut collar, this sombitch just took the licks and kept on catchin' hogs.  Very impressive.  Having a smaller, faster CD like this would greatly improve my productivity.  I have been working towards this with my Dogo cross breeding program... but I may have hit a dead end as the female I have been raising for the last yr and a half is not showing to be hard enough.  I may be making a big change in this respect soon.

Honestly not sure.  Watching this Petie dog work, the way he works, has me scratching my head.  He has caught a CHITPILE of bad hogs with no cut gear and is still alive.  There is something going on here that I am trying to understand.  Whatever it is, it is good

i jjust bought a bulldog off an older guy i hunt with.hes in his 60s kinda old school.dogs a little tank.he never used cut gear.just his 2in collar he was chained with.he has caught lots of hogs.looks kinda like frankenstien.he let me trial him.first hunt was with that same man.turned him loose with a vest and cut collar.hog got in the leg hole front and back.also under back of vest on the other side.cut all way into his lung, under chin just every where.it was crazy.this was an exceptional hog.he killed my lead dog and wrecked everything else.killed 2 more next time out.he was a whoper.il say hes not as quick with the vest but his still wearing it.minus cut collar.i decided he dosent have enough neck.

Glad you had a good time Noah. Can't tell how bad you got cut though, was it just a poke or something a little more?

Good to hear that you had an eye opening hunt brother,.....it's good to get out of the norm now and then for us all I reckon. Maybe you can make something good happen with this male or female that you spoke of....that would be a real plus for you. I hope that these folks are open to doing some breeding such as you mentioned. Glad you got to go on this adventure buddy....I'm about to go into the DTs up here,....this deer season stuff gets longer each year seems like. Got another month and a half of it then south GA swine beware......as Wyatt said,......"I'm coming,......and hell's coming with me." Grin

That sounds like a good hunt all together Noah! I'll tell you one thing... we sure have been having decent luck using Jane, Blake's smaller CD, and PJ, my bigger Amerigo. Let em both go at the same time, and most times Jane is gona hit hard first, and PJ comes in a drops the hammer second for back up. I will say, most times we've been on em it works like a champ, but just like everything else it doesn't work everytime. Could be worth a try though... one smaller and one bigger, covering both angles.  Evil

The dogos are too big in a lot of instances here in Florida - would love one about 70lbs.
