Ok, so my "hope to be 1st strike dog" is wanting to catch. This weekend, the hog was bout 60 lbs, Machito is bout 35.....this was his 3rd hog to get on with a loose YBMC (8 mths, great bay dog). I noticed he is wanting to catch on the neck and jaw area. The hogs are hittin hard and bitin good, and Machito shows no fear or signs of gettin loose-EVER! He will even lay down next to their face. Im wanting to teach him to stop nippin on the head. I guess he will quit when he gets hit harder- in due time, since he is only a pup, I figured he'd meet his match at around 9 or 12 mths, so he keeps his confidence. Until then-he will only get on 60 lbs and under. My question: Can u teach a rough dog to stop catchin or is it genetics? (He has a nice redbone-cat bloodline, but also a lil bulldog.)
*i did a search and there were hundreds of subjects, just didnt find a specific yes or no

-Forgot to mention- my wife says I can train him to quit touchin the hogs... I disagree and tell her he will pretty much live and die wanting to catch, or for sure nip.

he is going to be rough no matter what you do...you can try a muzzle on him and a bigger hog that will bang him around some...even if he is going to be rough he needs to at least respect the bigger hogs because he might not make it passed the first big bad boar hog he encounters in the woods...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

Machito is rough by nature about like LT. Just have to decide if you want that kind of dog and if you don't decide if you like him enough to put up with it. LT is too rough for me and I prefer a loose dog but he's always been one of my favorite dogs so I put up with it. Also if you don't argue with your wife about hog dogs it will make having hog dogs that much more enjoyable.
