We usually catch hogs live and bring them home for the bay pen or give them to people. The other day a I was talking to a local farrier about hog hunting and he told me that his son does a lot of hunting. he also told me that texas has a law against transporting feral hogs to keep them from being spread to areas they haven't populated yet. Anyone else heard of this?

In the pass there was a law against moving any hogs and selling them with out inspection but the TDHA worked long and hard with the help of a couple people to get with TAHC and we now have something that is better than nothing.

Special thanks to Cody Weiser for leading this group for TDHA.

Question: I didnt see it in the link anywhere, but what are the rules on transporting wild hogs out of the county they were trapped in? I have heard it was illegal to transport out of the state, but not the county. If that is true, then if you are taking them straight to the slaughter house or holding facility, does the facility have to be in the same county ?

Someone told me that if you keep a feral hog that you have to tag it, maybe this would apply.

You can transport live hogs within three counties and you can only keep a hog confined within 7 days, this is what a guy from the state told us.

I am not sure where the part about 3 counties comes from, that's the first I have ever heard of that Huh?

My understanding is that you can trap a hog in Orange, TX and haul it in a trailer to El Paso, TX, then haul it to slaughter in Dallas,TX so long as it happens within 7 days of being trapped.

I spoke to the Area 4 Superivisor of the TAHC ( Mt. Pleasant, TX ) and he said there is no law about transporting hogs across county lines as long as it is caught in Texas and transported to counties in Texas, state lines are a different story. No permit is needed to transport them. The hogs can be taken from the traps or woods, move to a holding facility or trailer for up to 5 days , and then to a Slaughter facility, buying station, or game ranch. Game ranch hogs must be tested for diseases before released.
The TPWD or Highway patrol CAN NOT pull you over and issue a citation for transporting hogs. A TAHC offical must be present and have proof you have not followed the transportation laws ( hogs taken to game ranches without being tested, holding period expired ) If you have any other questions, the number for the Area 4 office is 1-800-658-6560. Speak to either Chip Nickelson or Dr. Hawkins

Only thing wrong with what this guy said, is the length of time allowed to hold the hogs.

According to the TAHC publication, feral swine can be held in trap or pen for as long as 7 days.

The first lady i talked to said 5 days. But she said some of what she was reading from had been changed, so that might have been part of it. I just asked Chip if i could hold them for 5 days in my pen just to verify what she had told me and he said yes. He didnt exactly tell me it was 7 days max, but i did see that on the publication too. So 7 days is probably right!
