I have a 13 yr old retired cd in the last few months he has been having trouble walking now if he moves to the side or jumps up to put his paws up on the kennel door he falls over his legs are not working like his hips are bad also he wont gain wait .he had been wormed .i been debating on putting him to sleep but keep pushing it off. What would you do? Opinions please. Thanks, mark

That's a tuff one but I have always made that decision on the quality of his life. If he isn't hurtin I would have trouble puttin him down but you are the only one who can read that. It's a tough one. If you got him to 13 you did him pretty good.

Myself I would take him to the vet to see what it would take or if they could fix him. If they can't do anything then its quality of life. Does he seem happy or does he seem to hurt? If he seems fine make him as comfy as I could. If not put him down before the pain is constant. If he's that old my guess is he is a part of ur family. Just remember sometimes putting them down is better than suffering thru life.

Some times you have to do, what you don't want to do. It's your call. I don't think any man would tell you, to put your dog down. It's hard to just give up on one. What are you feeding him ? Alot of old dogs can't eat hard dog food. I would try can dog food or do like the old hunters, and feed him corn mill mixed with eggs. Also some old dog just needs to get out more and move around. To get the blood pumping. You may have to put him in a bigger pen also, if his not in one already.

Thought about this last night. Hip displaysia is an issue in some larger breed dogs. It is possible that this is what is happening. One of the test is to move the rear legs to the back and if the go to far they pop out of socket. When he rare's up they could be popping out causing him to fall. This could also explain the same issue when moving quickly to the side. Gitting up can also be harder and more painful when this problem exist. If this is the case all that can be done is mild pain killers mixed with being made as comfortable as possible. It will come down to quality of life in the end but I thought this could explain the issue as u have it now.

ive got one about the same age, he has a hip sway when he walks and is clumsy now but i wouldnt put him down just because he is old and not useful to me anymore he did his job back in his days and im going to do mine now and take care of him until he kicks over. its not everyday a bulldog dies to natural death
