My dogs are young 1 to 1.5 years. One was started in a pen when I got it other was not started at all. My question is. At times I can get a good race going that will get out over 900yrd so I get a lil closer. Then they may go out a lil further getting back over 900. So I try to get closer again. I never get closer than 300 to 400yrd till I feel they have bayed. The thing is it seems just about the time it should be over the dogs come back backtracking. At 400yrds I should not be close enough to spook a bay. I have had several races go for 1000yrd or more. Do y'all think they are just not finishing or quiting the bay race. In a couple place it could have been just loseing the track other Times I can't see a reason for them to lose. How do I fix this without a seasoned dog to go with. I don't have a pen and the fact these young dogs are rough in a pen its hard to find a person willing to put my dogs in the pen and tear up pigs.

Possibly could be a couple things...
1 - you say they are rough? Maybe ones too rough and the other isn't as rough as you think. So ...dog 1 try's to catch and dog 2 doesn't help. Then it's a Busted Bay.
2 - just need more work..both still young
Maybe?

I hope it's #2. Ain't gonna give up on them for a while yet. The reason I say rough my male will put teeth on one in a pen and if a catch dog hits he will try to help catch. The female will go for an ear in a pen almost every time. She will put teeth on a sack or butt as she goes by. I am trying to find someone with an older dog to run them with to see if it helps.

Are u sure they r running a hog? Sounds kinda like what my pups do when running a deer. The deer finally smokes their ars and they head back.

I'm in monticello ar.
Not sure 100%. The race Sunday I looked for tracks where they crossed a wet road and it looked like hog tracks. Earlier That same day I watched a deer jump up 20 yards from them and they didn't run but 50 60 yards and came back. It is possible they were on deer. The one lil pig we did get I was able to watch the whole thing. They took off up road jumped right ditch made a loop came back crossed left ditch made a loop the lil pig ran across road with them on its heels. When it hit woods they hit it. I let them kill it then petted and praised them real good. Have them a leg each when we got home.
