I use tuff skin and like them so far. That would eliminate the biting them off.

I use some orange 1/8" cable from tsc cut 16" long and a squeeze on eye. They work just as good as the factory and aftermarket antennas that i have used. The cable and blue eyelet  connectors only cost a couple dollars to make a few antennas and i would venture to say they are way tougher than any out there.
As u can see from the pic they stick straight up like they need to.

Peach, you talking about just regular twist cable? I got a bunch of 1/8" galvanized left from building snares. Sounds like a good use for it if so!

Yep just regular cable with a plastic coating. I looked at some antennas mike bought somewhere that work good for him and it looked like they were just cable so i tried it. I cut one 20" and it didnt pick up as far as the one i cut 16", could have just been my collar? I may be off on the 1/8" cable but the cable i used is close to the same outside diameter as the factory antenna. I know it was the smallest orange cable tsc had. I made some others a while back from a 12 gauge single strand of speaker wire that had better range than any i have used. I used the speaker wire pun along a heavy weed eater cord then shrink wrapped it all together, the reception was great but the briars and stuff tore up the shrink wrap in a few hunts.
