We got a phone call today from a friend saying that we might want to give our hunting spot a rest for a while. We hunt a large farm (few thousand acres) with corn, milo, and rice fields to help the farmers with hog control. Our friend told us that the state came in today with a helicopter, in the middle of the day mind you, and killed around 80 hogs. Shocked :'(  And they are going to do it again tomorrow Undecided  I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. When they are finished, I hope we can still find a hog. Sad I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen in their area?

well this place is surrounded with woods but them hogs just can't resist a free meal. Hoping that a few smart hogs stayed in the woods today. What I can't beleive is that they killed so many in the middle of the day with it being 100 degrees! I figured they would be layed up in the shade some where.

I don't have anything against the choppers but all I ask is that they prove how many hogs they claim they killed just cause they shoot at that many hogs doesnt mean there dead.  Also I wouldnt worry too much about there are any left them choppers cant get them all especailly this time of the year theres to much cover for a hog to hind in. just my 2 cents

In my experience, the choppers are like fisherman.   They stretch the truth just a little.  I've been on places 3 times after helicopters ran and once while they were there.  They gave numbers similar to yours.  I saw 3 dead hogs out of all 4 times.   Just remember, if they don't "produce" they are out of work.

Most likely it didn't make a difference. Alot of times your can hunt the night after and still kill hogs.

IF they continue to do it the hogs learn to lay still in the thick stuff and the chopper is useless. They have to be able to flush the hogs into open places where they can get shots.

If any thing they may have cleaned out some of the little ones...  Grin

Thanks yall, I feel much better. Azn  By the way, running those helicopters has got to be expensive. I could think of better ways to spend our tax dollars.

dont worrie they will still be there they do it all the time on a place we hunt down on the coast....and you have guys that will go out there every weekend and shoot 4 or 5 hogs shining with a qbeam and leave them laying which makes me sick but we always still manage to catch hogs there even with all the hunting pressure.

Well gentlemen, I do alot of hog control out of the chopper. As a private company.   I do have a pack of dogs as well. I can guarantee that these guys didnt get all of the hogs. I have personaly flew ranches and killed hogs in the morning.  Went back with my dogs that night and  caught hogs with my dogs. As for their numbers I cant say, I will say that 80 is a damn good day.

If anyone would know, it would be JJ. I was talking to a friend who is the government trapper for our county. I asked him how they know how many they kill. In so many words....he told me they count the shells they shot.

They flew a ranch I hunt and claimed to have killed 200 hogs in one day. Three days later I caught 7 hogs in about 3 hours.

It's not as bad as you would think.

Instead of waste fuel why doesnt the goverment just go head and put a bounty on hogs and let the numbers be proven but then again I imagine If they did that by the time they took out taxes we be still do it for free, dont mind doing it for free but do they pay someone to do a job that doesnt have to prove how good of a job they did! Thats my 2 cents

There was an articel about the govt giving like 2 Mil to land owners to help deal with hogs problem. I wonder if that wasn't part of that? The land owner had to ask for it... they didn't just do it.

we have a govt. trapper here where i live, and they fly all the time here, but we still catch just as many hogs as we were before they started flying.  they just seem to move them around a little.  i agree that thiers numbers don't usually match what they say they killed, because if they did, i don't think you would see near as many baby pigs as we see.  Another note, I worked on the Matthews Ranch at Albany about 12 years ago and they privately hire a chopper to fly the Matthews and Nail Ranches, flough for three hours and killed 200+ pigs and thirty five or so coyotes, but the next day, you couldn't teel any difference in the number of pigs you saw.  Just my $.02

During peak fuel prices it was costing ~$500+/ hour.......should still be ~400$ with fuel going back up.

The only way a fisherman can come close the class of a chopper shooter is if they counted every time they cast as a fish caught.  My dad was freinds with the old Bell County trapper and he claimed to have killed all the hogs on a place, save a few, that he wanted to be cleaned up with dogs.  Well a few turned into 13 hogs in one day and we left plenty hogs with thier freedom and saw Zero dead hogs or buzzards.  Come to find out they count thier shells and thats how many hogs they killed. Give me a break.  Another thing to pay attention to is the number they throw out there its always 40, 50, 60, 80.  You wont ever hear them say we got 23, or 37.  Its just proof they are making it up.  They have to justify the cost honestly or not.   I turned 12 dogs loose this morning so I caught 12 hogs.  lol Grin
