Thought about this a while back. Then read the other post on pulling dogs.
Have any of y'all thought training some bulldogs to pull your hogs out of the woods?

All it would take is a good handle on your catchdog and for it to know the basics of weight pulling...pretty good idea.

Yea I thought about this a few weeks ago while I was pulling several hogs out of the woods. Don't they pull up to like a ton or am I mistaken?

How do you get them to pull and not catch?

A shock collar or the right lead rope does wonders for manners on a bulldog...I'm sure alil extra on either would make em act right.

I am sure they could be trained. I have seen bulldogs let go of hog on command an just sit by hog. I just need to study up on the bulldog pulling.

The other problem I see is that the dog would pull flat and not be able to go over stuff as easy. I just don't have a hard time dragging pigs. Aftter tying the legs I bring the rope up and around the head and mouth and tie it. Then attach a rope to the head so you are dragging them nose first. That is how they run through stuff so they drag real easy. Dragging them sideways is harder. On the other end of the rope I tie a rescue knot and use it like a harness on my shoulders. Then I just walk out and the pig comes right behind me. If I step over something pulling from the shoulders lifts the pigs nose so it goes right over most of the time. . But with my bad knees I can do it. You use your own weight to drag the pig. One of the times the extra pounds help you.

I always walk them out. Helps to have someone to kick their head in the right direction sometimes.

Yea I walk them out as well. Seems to be faster and they dont get so stressed out. I just walk them out backwards and when they get tired I just flip them on their sides and hold them down till they start trying to kick back up

if ya'll can find bulldogs that can pull a ton i'll sell my mules and go to loggin with k-9 s Grin Grin

to drag a big hog it would take several dogs , and you can feed a horse a lot cheaper  Wink

another thing to think about ,and this is true - pound for pound  a goat can pull more than a bulldozer  laugh

I have thought about rolled up hard plastic. So it would wrap around the pig and be easy to carry. Figure a trap would be easier to carry though.
