I agree. A dog needs to be fed every day. On the flip side. Im trying to trim ours up a bit. They are a little on the heavy side to be working and running in the heat that is fixing to be upon us.

I think that most take good care of their dogs. You cant catch hogs with unhealthy dogs.

But there will always be a few out there that are just too stupid to own dogs. Its not just hog hunters, its all across the board.

I don't see it being that much more expensive per dog to keep them in good shape? I don't have as many as some of y'all but I fight to keep mine from getting to fat and that's with them running loose average an hour a day so plenty of exercise. I've seen plenty of guys on here feeding ol Roy and their dogs look good how much cheaper can it get?

There is a differance in keeping your dogs in shape and not feeding them. They defenatley don't need to be fat. But they dang sure need to be fed every day and healthy. Hungry dogs don't hunt healthy dogs do

It's honestly not as much about the food as it is worming them. Parasites steal from the dog and keep it from getting what it needs. I give my dogs two cups per day of sportmix and they get rolling fat when they're not getting hunted hard and they usually don't even eat it all. I give them comfortis for fleas, Worm-x for all intestinal parasites and back it up with ivomec for heart worms. Also vaccinate them. You save money in the long run and you have much better looking and better performing dogs.

A dog man once told me dogs are like coyotes. They don't have to eat every day. I also know a dog will hunt better on a empty belly. That being said,I keep feed out free choice for mine. And try to hunt the tallow off if it gets to be a problem.

This is my catch dog "Lightning". He eats a lard sammitch and 6 donuts every morning for breakfast . He might be a tad over his
running weight but I don't like his ribs showing.

On days that I am gonna run them, I cut their feed amount back to a quarter of the amount they'd normally get. I know I'd feel like number 2 trying to run a marathon on a full stomach, lol.

I know what you are talking about, but since my gyp got hurt it is hard to keep weight on her, especially after a weekend of hunting she looks poor enough to be embarrassing and everyone knows I take a dogs nutrition very serious. We had a full Plott that we wormed, fed 4x as much as other dogs his size and he stayed poor looking until he turned 2 and his metabolism started slowing down and now he is filled out and a dang beautiful dog until he runs for 30 miles or so then he drops weight fast. Got a Kemmer x Plott that will not put weight on period. Even had the vet try too. He just stays busy all the time! So just because a dog is skinny doesn't mean that they aren't being taken good care of necessarily.

That is something i have never understood myself i look at it this way okay you want your dogs to be in good shape right?well you don't eat for a week and see how good you feel and how far you can run..its the same with a dog !!!a healthy dog is a good hunting dog being in shape is the same as it is for people you feed a good diet and lots of exercise.not starve them....i have many people i come across and there dogs look like death warmed over i have to say ...i get mad and 9-10 times i say something its always the answer oh well they run it off!!okay well when you feed them onice a week hell  yeah they run it off!!   what is all..lol
