Our gyp, Penny had her first litter early this morning sometime. She had 10 healthy pups out of our Red dog. Red is getting on in years and its our first litter out of him. We are pretty excited about these pups. Any how....what I'm wondering is since she had the puppies out in the doghouse early this morning when the temp was in the thirties, do yall think I should put a heat lamp out for them since it will be in the thirties again tonight or do yall think they will be fine without one? I'm sure I will put one out for piece of mind but I was wondering if I worry too much.

I would imagine they would be fine with just shelter. But if you have a heat lamp I would put it out there   Smiley. Congrats on the pups

Id run a heat lamp just in case. No sense in loosing pups for NOT doing it. Just remember to shut it off when it warms up, dont want to cook em either.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I was thinking better safe than sorry also. Especially with her being a first time mother.

Thanks Justin, I can't believe that she had so many either. She had four yellows, 3 male, 1 female.  Three Bmc's, 2 male, one female. And three brindles, 2 males, 1 female.  So that's a total of 7 males and 3 females.

Yes. Lol. The bmc's are red like daddy. A few of the yellows are reddish also. Just too early to tell. One of the brindles is a red brindle like his grandpa, Foot.

Congratulations Dinah.....I hope every one of the pups turns into a hog hunting machine,....y'all deserve it in my book. Another alternative to putting the lamp inside the doghouse is to put it outside of it very close to the side or back and let the heat radiate through the side, just another idea.

Thank yall.  I'm pretty excited. This is stage two of my own line bred dogs. We came into some good dogs back in 2008. It took me two years to decide which dogs to breed for our first litter. Got my first litter in 2010. Now after raising those pups and watching them turn into good hunting stock, I decided to progress to stage two. After another three years of deliberation, we now have our second litter. We had an accidental litter a few years ago, but I'm talking about my breeding program. At the rate I'm going, I should have some bad ass dogs by the time I'm 80.  Cheesy

Oh yeah, I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight without putting up a heat lamp. I went out to the kennel and looked inside. Momma dog was curled up around her pups tight as a cut worm. I went ahead and put the heat lamp in there for them. It's a big dog house with about 3 1/2 foot ceiling and a big opening for the door. I put it up in the far opposite corner, so I think they will be warm without getting too hot.

Yeah I agree. This being her first litter I figure she might need a little help. I went out to check on them and she had her back to the heat lamp and the pups facing the door. They were a little chilly sh I scooted Momma back against the back corner with the pups more towards the heat lamp. They are a little more relaxed now.
