Short 500 yards abd under
Medium 500-1000 yards
Long 1000 + yards
I would say the ranges they hunt in no sign.

I consider a Short range dog to be in the 300yd range....Med. 500yd range...Long 1000yd range give or take...

Just for confirmation, if a short is say 300 and under, they will hunt out that far, and check in regularly ....so if med is 600 +/-, they will search out no further unless they strike....long is 1000 +, they are roamin to strike......in any case , that's how they will hunt mostly. BUT, when they strike - the race is on - unless they bay solid. Am I understanding this correctly?

I think varies by geographical location.

Here's what I learned about range in South Texas years back...

Short - beside or behind the truck.

Medium - in the headlights.

Long - past the headlights.

I turned my two old leopard dogs loose and they rolled... them boys said "Oooh weee thems some long range dogs!" ha ha ha!

x2...for me a short range dog ranges in 300 yard loops or less in all directions around the handler when the handler is moving slow...

I like hunting dogs that loop 300 yards when moving kind of slow...but when I slow way down for them to loop out 5 or 6 hundred yards...if I stop these dogs will go further once they cover the radius...but I don't care for the long range dogs that hunt for themselves...

I have what i call a short range wind dog not to be confuse with a dog that trail hunts! She hunts out in front of my wheeler mostly and its obvious when she smells one she will take off and go however far it takes to stop the hog. If im walking through the woods she hunts out 100 - 300 yards consistently in no sign. Can ride dog on wheeler and wind hogs also anyways that my definition of a short range wind dog. To me a long range dog is what i call a  casting style dog - you hit a spot drop the dogs out and they make large loops covering a big area while you just stand by and wait for them to bay or check back in if they don't find anything.
