Friendly debate between Father and Son

1st off I'm 100% family man...my wife is my best friend..then my boy is next .I want someone to help me enlighten my boy  he's (16) that Dad is sometimes "right"...remember this is friendly..I've been hunting hogs off and on for over 20yrs 90% of the time on the garmen if you HV a dog that's running a deer it will be consistent straight to zig zagging lines....but when in hogs most of the time its figure 8's and or circles....this happened on a recent hunt and you know what.....POP was right again....( there is some exceptions I know)...I'm gonna try to load some pics...(evidence)... 1 pics deer running.. 1pic caught 2 hogs.

My experience as been been that deer run circles. Limited experience though.

The top pic ran deer for 2-2  1/2 hrs (no shock collar at time)....2nd pic caught 2 hogs....like I said there is exceptions but the years I've hunted deer and hogs with dogs that's what they usually happens.

I havnt had much experience with it either but from wat a guy told me a deer won't leave the place. Just run in circles?? This was an older guy... I was staying with a friend. His dad has hunted his whole life. And just like wat you were sayin him and his son were having the same debate as you and yours is. This was over taking a certain pup that nite or not. The most painful part about it is that I wanted to go hunting after driving for 2 hours and they had to argue for half an hour over it and ended up not even taking the dog lol.


But the older guy swears up and down that a deer will run circles.

We actually seen these deer several times during this hunt through the chase they made it back to there spot a few times...and on other hunts also...

I think a deer would run twice as fast as a hog.

 I started out hunting deer 25yrs ago and there are exceptions to both running circles and running zig-zags, but the majority of the time, iv notice the deer run a circle. I guess it depends on the situation why the deer was spooked to begin with, and maybe a dog runnin it, it would run zig-zag but I know when I would jump them, they would run 4-500yrd out and make a big circle and come back 15-20min later. aint no science to it unless some1 has put a trackin collar on 1 and tested, but it could be that both of yaw correct.

A deers path depends on pressure. If the dogs push it it will line out and book it. They will hit open ground to put distance between them. If pushed slow they will run circles and such with straight lines when a dog gets close. This is the difference between running walkers on deer and beagles. Hogs tend to want to stay in the thicker stuff running thicket to thicket. An open area tends to be last resort. I figure for the most part like u straight is deer circles hogs. I will do what I can to cross the track to see if its deer or hog before I scold.

i can usually tell if they are running deer by how they bark and my finishd dogs will not run a deer will come back to me as if to say hey the young ones are messing up.

Run deer my whole life with walkers they will flat out leave the country when pushed fast enough. Didn't have garmin then  though. I never had a deer run circles. But they will come back to where they live might take a day or two.

   boys most deer have a territory and will run all over their territory and familiar ground . they do run a big ol loop and have to be pushed hard to leave familier ground .  deer will just run and stop and run and stop when an old slow cur dog is after them . now they don't run loops like a rabbit  lol  they run big plum out of hearing loops .

In my short time i have seen deer and hogs both leave the country and both run circles. (Big ass circles like halfbreed said) not rabbit circles!

So I guess in all my years of running deer I could have set more or less in one spot like I was running rabbits and killed deer. I don't think so

Ur dogs r trained to keep pressure on deer, thats the diff between a dog trashn on 1 n runin it a ways n sayn the hell with it. Deer and hogs both will run a circle. Like u said, u didnt hav a garmin to show track, so how do u know with out a shadow of a dout, ur dogs were runin the exact same deer and not a deer that was jumped and the original deer didnt run a circle.
Ur NOT wrong bout them leavin the county, but ur NOT right by sayn they wont run a circle.

  no you cain't hunt them like rabbits hillbilly  you'd be there all day twiddleing your thumbs till the deer got back around   lmao .  but you can bet ya last dollar that if the hounds was on it long enough yep he'd be right back where he started .  how did ya'll hunt the deer you ran with dogs ?  just curious . we spread out through the club property on the loggin roads with the cb's going and the hounds a singing . and it wasn't nothing to get a shot off at the same deer a couple different loops .  that was during blackpowder season it is a blast . I just posted here a while back about the radio collard deer studies done with deer dogs in georga or Alabama I foget wich state but it showed no different than I stated . the deer very seldom left their home range and when they did they were right back home the next day two at the latest  .  if the deer just took off in a straight line when jumped then using dogs would be very unproductive , you could never set up or know where to set up to get a shot . just my rememberances of the subject shame they made us quit in texas .

I've ran rabbit dogs for as long as I can remember with beagles and we've had a few who wouldn't leave a deer alone and I'll tell you from experience they run circles!

Yea we run just like everyone else had standards with cb's. We would cast dogs they jump and make several crossing unless they was running a doe . If doe we would catch dogs. If buck or nobody seen it we would run them for as long as needed. Deer will more or less run same pattern. We would put people where they usually crossed. Only deer I ever seen making circles in my many years of running deer was a buck and that was only a couple times. You know it the same deer when you see it and then see it again 20 miles later. I have read the deer study before I know they have a home range and will come back home everytime unless killed. Ust saying almost every deer we ever jumped would head straight to the ouachita river miles away.

I'd say you both need to trash break them dogs So go give your boy a big hug and tell him to help you break the dogs off deer so you both know they are chasing deer. Now I ain't talking bad about your dogs. I try to turn any moment I can into a let's work together thing. Right or wrong don't matter when they get older than about middle school. I annoy my oldest by just walking up and hugging him out of the blue. He don't like it but I hope he knows that I always care no matter what we do not agree on. Of course I still kick him in the rear too

Yeah this was all in good sport. .me and my boy was just discussing its all good...by the way that dog stays away from deer now...he doesn't like to be lit up...lol
