I know it's illegal in Texas to hunt deer with dogs.  But me and my buddy today were just wondering how you'd even hunt deer with dogs.  Deer are way faster.  I'm guessing they can run longer.  And they can jump over anything a dog can and then some.  So how would you even do it.  Just out of curiosity.  My buddy seems to think it's not possible.  But it's gotta be possible for there to be a law against it.  Right?

The dogs jump and trail the deer ...usually hounds.....or open dogs and u wait near where deer typically cross roads or pipelines or trails and shoot em with shot guns loaded with buckshot! Its a little more complicated but that's it in a nutshell!

Deer are a lot easier to run than hogs. If you want to run them all day get you some running walkers

Same as running beagles on rabbits....just bigger loops and races.

Got my name drawn for a hunt when I was in the army. The impact areas (areas where bombs, mortars, etc. were dropped) were large...hundreds of acres...and the game would congregate in them because they were off limits. Twice a season they would run packs of dogs through them. The hunters would be stationed about 150 yards apart on the roads surrounding the area. I didn't get anything but there were probably 4-5 deer killed and 3 hogs.

They ran the taller Beagles...the 15" I think they are.??

We hunt huge stands of cypress swamp with a few dogs and 5 or 6 people. We know where the deer will cross the sloughs and bayous.
The deer have been using these same crossings for years. Years ago there would be 20 or so hunters covering every crossing, now we just
hunt with a few people and take a stand where we think the deer will cross. Each deer has multiple escape routes. Sometimes we guess
right, sometimes not.

buddy of mine used to run 1/2 beagle 1/2 redbone hounds and that is what he thought were the best...not to fast so the deer wouldn't run out the county but they kept them moving...

We ran walkers. We had 6 that we ran all season. We would get the family together go to a block of woods. Beings we hunted the delta the blocks would be from 40 to 200 acres most places. If the block had stands inside the woods a couple would get on them the rest would go to pinch points and other spots they were known to cross. I preferred the spot that was up wind. My dad always went with the dogs. When they jumped he made his way to where he thought he needed to be. We all shot rifles not shotguns. When the deer hit the fields u cut down on them. U learn how to shoot or u don't kill anything. A deer stretched out running across a field at 200 yards is a challenging target to say the least. As was said earlier sometimes we were in the right spot sometimes not. I was 18 or so before I still hunted enough to say I done it. The rest of the time was dogs. Our dogs ran loose during the summer. This kept our dogs in top shape and the fact that they ran on their own every night made them top notch.

If u want to have some fun deer hunt off the cab of a tractor in overgrown pastures. Lol
