I got a 5 yr old catahoula mix dog that I would consider one of my main dogs. He will go out and find them and bay the heck out of them but as soon as he sees me get there he will take off and leave. He will take off before the hog is even caught. Its getting to be very frustrating. I dont want him teaching my other dogs to do the same I would like for him to stay there till the sucker is caught. Is there anything I could do to teach him to stay or is it just in him to leave when he sees me? He acts like he thinks hes going to get in trouble when he sees me walking up. I praise him and let him know that he has done a good job when he comes back to me but it doesnt seem to do any good. I have whooped him off armidillos and other trash before so I guess he thinks Im going to get onto him when I see him on a pig. I might just need to retire him and get me another good dog.

I have had him since he was 6 weeks old. He is a dang good dog other than leaving the bay. He will go out and strike and bay the hog but he will leave as soon as he sees me. I mean I have whooped him off of trash but never punished him when he has bayed a hog.

Not usually. I try to get there and access the situation and then turn the bull dog loose. Usually while Im doing that he will see me and quit baying and he acts like he is going to get in trouble or something.

Ya I would start turning the bull dog loose before he sees you and if he stays ok if he rolles back out to hunt and you don't like them like that send him my way. When I get to a caught hog I like for nothing to be there but the catch dog

Don't do anything!
Let him do his own thing, he knows the other dogs have him bayed. Let him leave and go find another hog. I wish all my dogs did that right there.

x1000 I have owned one dog that is gone before i get there if pigs are around i mean you know he struck the first hog and he is baying the 2nd by the time you get to the first. Don't retire him, send him to me. Ill send you one that will stay at the first bay and help catch with you! Thats one dog out of 100

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...
