last week we caught 2 good boars...one about 150 and one about 275-300...that hunt caused me to rest a rough strike dog pup for 2 weeks...today we caught one about 225-250 and now have another dog that needs a little time out but should be alright for next week...

with 2 loose bay dogs and 2 catch dogs probably could have caught 5 today...

last week we had a good mt cur that is awesome by himself and his owner shoots a 12 gauge with slugs over him but when he hunts with gritty dogs he will be gritty...didn't have him today...

I still like gritt but loose baying strike dogs probably produce more day in and day out...I am talking about the ones that will try to stop a runner but once stopped will back up and bay...just not my style...  Smiley

I need to invest in lightweight but good running vests...
Ruben I agree w all that u said I did just what you said also ,invested in some running vest it keeps cuts down to about 85 %

Best way ive found also. 1-2 loose bay strike dogs that can work a hog and 2-3 fly to the bay catch dogs. Catch dogs lock it down the loose baying strike dogs roll over. We caught twelve in a day lil over a week ago with 4 dogs. The two strike dogs rolled over 11 times in a row ofter every hog. left the truck once and didnt get back till 12 were dead. Kinda one of those days you dream of! Very seldom have runners. Works good for is but a lot of people dont like it. Or look at me like i am crazy when i cut the bulldogs at 600 yards lol

I wouldn't bet on it.

ok...been doing the gritty dog way since the real early 1980's...that is a challenge I like...loose baying dogs are not for me...the downside to the gritty dogs... wore down dogs early in the hunt...possible having to lay a dog up and sometimes worse...
some gritty dogs are awesome when hunted alone...the right gritt to stop a hog and they bay loose...but like I said don't care about that style...

loose dogs don't get as tired and they can bay many times in one day if they have the hunt and stick...

Reuben, I put one, maybe two dogs on the ground and I'm not sure what they do to stop a hog but 99% of the time we don't have these crazy races I read about. Now these two dogs are loose as can be even when running with a bunch of catchy dogs they will never catch, nor do they catch when a bulldog hits. I hunt a spot down here on the coast around us that is dogged by many and has been for years and its some thick crap but have yet to get skunked out there this year and my farthest bay to date was last Friday. I guess I'm trying to say I am all about these two loose ones I run, less down time and just as many pigs at the end of the day..

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog...

chad makes a good point i hunt yello rough currs the 2 men i nunt with usually bring 4 bay dogs and 2 catchrs and i bring 3 yellow dogs and a catchr or two usually not much of a race and the yello dogs are getting rough as a colb went east the other day took one yello dog that is usually a gritty dude. we hunted him with one other dog the yello dog struck 2 hogs bayed both hogs until we turned the catchers loose. to many dogs can cause lots of gritty dogs
