My second catch dog just turned a year old and i started training him to catch. The first time i put him in with some smaller pigs and he would chase them around then i put him in with a bigger pig and he wouldn't do anything even when she would hit him. So then i put my other catch dog in and he caught and then he wanted some so he went and caught on the ear and i had to break them both off so i was happy about that. But the problem is that he will not catch by himself he will only catch when my other catch dog catches. How do I get him to catch by himself?

Throw him in a small cattle trailer or a real small pen with a hog (little to no cutters preferably) and he'll figure it out from there. He'll get tired of getting his @$$ kicked.

I'm with JRyan, let him get beat up an Bit on by a rank Sow or lil boar in a small pen. And If that dont spark it, I'd be huntin another CD. They either got it or they dont.

All you got to do is flip that bigger hog over
And when it squeals he will catch it then let
The hog go with him caught.

I wouldnt put him in a trailer and let him get beat up, he may just need a little more time and maturity.  I would continue turning him loose with your other bulldog.  The other course of action is he may just not have it in him.  Have you raised him from a pup or did you get him recently?  If you got him recently, what was he used for before you got him?

BINGO!!!!

I have never "trained" a cd so to say. the method I have used it EASY and has worked for me for years............

put 1 bay dog in a pen with a good sow or boar......let the bay dog settle the hog into a corner.....turn cd loose from opposite end of the pen.  he will more than likely get hyped up and catch. if he doesn't pull him out and do it again except drop him right next to the hog the next go round. Odds are he will get his butt whooped on a bit and get pissed off and the rest will be history..........may not be the right way but it has never failed for me......come to think of it.....every cd I have owned started just like that and they have all ended up working out good.

No I have raised him from a puppy. He doesnt have trouble catching when my other CD is with him its just when he is alone in the pen by himself but when my other catchdog gets in he catches like a train.

Put a bay dog in with him. See if it helps.

sounds like a young ,willing dog that isnt sure of his job yet. keep sending him with the older catchdog .  two ears two bulldogs .he will figure it out in notime.

Sounds like he just needs more time. Keep using him as a second and it want be long if he has it in him, and it sounds like he does he will be doing it on his on. Some start firing alittle slower than others.

He needs 2 build his confidence up if u put him a trailer or small pen 2 things can happen 1 he catches 2 u Ruin him and he won't look at a hog again. If it was me keep exposing him 2 hog with your finished catch dog about 5 to 6 times then once his confidence up send him in alone.

That's an obvious confidence issue. Put him on more hogs with that other dog for a few months and he should get over it
