Its hard to know if I'm gonna be right or wrong in this instance, but the more you feed those pups for her, the less likely she is to produce.
Anybody who's had a real young wife have a baby knows what I mean. The more nervous they get thinking their not making enough milk, the more they feed the formula, the less likely they will produce milk. She probably was just producing colosseum at first at it scared you Becuase you might have figured she should have been heavy bagged and milking hard from the get go. As long as she has food and water, she will make milk.

i'm with t-bob the first few days is the colostrum days and then you get into milk production . some gyps will look like a holstene heifer and some don't show much at all , but the pups have to drink for the gyp to produce .

I've learned to watch the puppies behavior. If they look content and taking naps between feedings, everything is probably going as it should. Some times it doesn't look like the bitch is producing but she is. I'm not a fan of messing with the puppies the first few days. If it's her first litter she is somewhat nervous already trying to figure things out and she will.
I think the most important thing you can do for an upcoming litter is to make sure the bitch is in the best health as possible. I worm mine right after breeding. The last 2 to 3 weeks of pregnancy I increase her feed and give her a slice of raw liver every day. Some times they will have puppies when no one is around and sometimes they will have them when we are home. I try to leave her have them in peace and quiet. As Terry and halfbreed mentioned , the first few days it is very important they consume colostrum. This is what passes antibodies from mom to pups. The more pups suck the more milk she will produce. Just my observations.

Im with tbob n jimco. First rattle outa the cage she wont hav full bags, but the more the pups nurse, the more she will produce, as long as she has all the feed n water she eat n drink in front of her at all times. If the pups were sucklin and werent screamin to high hevens while at the tit, she is producing and they r getn enuf. Colostrum is very lite in color n not a whole lot is produced, only for the first few days. The. The milk starts flowin. Put them on her n watch the pups n her for 30+ mins. If they stay on the tit, they r contint n r getn a belly full.
