What are some of the things you have tried to convince to a non-hunter or a non-hog dogger about the sport itself.

The question I hate to hear is "are they mean?".  So I have to show them they arent, they are just like every other dog that loves to be patted and talked to. The only difference is these Turdhounds have a job that they love. I think its just a misconception b/c i hear people say i want a hog dog but i dont want it to kill my weiner dog. or even a post i just read that a person was taken back because WDK's lead dog sleeps with him. It just bothers me that thats the way some people view us and the dogs. b/c if a person thinks they are just killers well then you are just the idiot that owns them and is putting the neighborhood at Risk.

Well, my dogs don't like strangers, period. They don't like them at my house and don't like them when they are in the dogbox. But I don't think that makes me an idiot......

I paid a pile of money to build escape proof pens and have no problems with my neighbors.I also have my yard fenced with hogwire so even when my dogs are out of the pens they are confined.  My dogs don't get lose and kill the neighbors pet dog/cat or bite their kids. We have a 7 lb Jack Russell and 3 cats and a pile of chickens and my dogs don't kill them. Monkey runs loose in the yard every night and most days and doesn't bother anything. But, he will bite someone if they come in the yard. So I think its just the type of hog dogs you have. Some are more aggressive than others. Its up to the dogs owner to be responsible for the dogs.

If someone comes to my house uninvited and tries to take something out of the barn, break into the house, etc they will get dog bit no doubt.

And thats how I want my dogs. Growing up thats how ALL cur dogs were that I ever saw. They were great family dogs, but didn't like strangers.

I don't want a dog in my house, at all. Not even the Jack comes in the house, and thats any dog, not just hog dogs. But thats just my preference.

maybe i need to clarify myself i am not calling ne one an idiot. I am try to understand the other sides thinking. To each his own, all Iam trying to say is that people get this idea of what a hogdog is and most of the time it isnt even close.

I agree. I have alot of friends here because i live in a college town, and no-one wants to bring their dog or pet over because they think mine are going to eat their's. If they didnt know they were hog dogs, they would never have known. Mine are as friendly as can be and would do dang near anything to be petted or come inside to cuddle with you on the couch haha. I have also had alot of people comment towards me that they think i am cruel to my animals because i hunt with them. Some people dont have the slightest clue how things are done.

I used to not like people aggressive dogs but after I found my dogs in someone elses hands a couple hunts on the way to someone elses trucks and worrying about someone walking up to my pens and helping themselves I like the group of dogs I have now.  These dogs see me and one other person in the back of the property and are hunted with me and the other person.  I would feel sorry for the man that tried to steal a dog from those pens.  One night my cur dog actually bayed a poacher under an oak tree.  When i got there he said I just grabbed his collar and he bit me and stared baying me.  I haven't caught him out there since then.  Grin  Let them believe their mean I like em that way I worry less about theives.

I don't think it is just hog dogs. Take the pit bull, a few people have had there dogs attack kids or neighbors, It is on the TV or in the Newspaper for a week. I think the dog should be saved and the owner euthanized.  It all boils down to the owner, I have 2 dogs that are pretty aggressive have them on 2 acres with exterior fence and invisible fence five foot inside of that. when The front gate is open the dogs are kenneled. If the gate is closed you either blow the horn, call ahead or go away. We have had people starting to break into homes in our rural area. A guy about a mile or so down the road from me had his house broken into, they stole 54 guns in the gun safe, punch the lock somehow, then stole jewelry and electronics. He has five good size dogs in his yard, they must have been pointers, they pointed at good thinks to steal. I want my dogs to eat the sh-t anyone on my property illegally. You have to remember that hunting hogs with dogs in not a media or photographic friendly sport. People see dogs with blood all over them, pictures of wounded dogs and videos of dogs catching a hog and the hogs quelling loudly.  It looks lot worse than it is.

Yeh, i have people tellin me all the time that it is such a cruel sport and they haven't even ever done it before. It's all about the misconceptions of the sport and the media thats why I always explain the damages that hogs cause to property and our ecosystems and that my dogs are trained to do their job and have vests on. Educating people seems to help alot with the misconceptions.
