My sister and her fiance bought a wolf pup from someone in Athens yesterday, its apparently 82% and the rest is sheppard. Just curious if anyone has been around them or even used them to hunt..... I know it may be a little warm with their coat but just curious because she said and I kind of liked the idea of breeding my strike dog to her and seeing what we had to work with, I have been looking to breed him anyways because I have had him four years now and no pups yet from him and I need to get something.... I dont want to really jump into something without having an idea but it does spark my interest a bit. Any advice, thoughts, concerns would be appreciated.

I knew a vet that raised them , took them from mother before their eyes opened and bottle fed them and even then as adults or juveniles if one got out of the kennel and left out running around they would have to be darted to catch them . they go back wild that fast .

i have a buddy that got one he was gonna try to use as a hog dog she was exstreamly smart but exstreamly skiddish, no one could catch her and she would come anywhere near the house to get food so he winded up havin to put her down

But Im wondering about the pups, half Cat and half Wolf.... I wonder if it would take some of the skiddish outta the pups or something?

Is this Wolfdog one of the greatest hog dogs you've ever seen?
If not,
Then no. No reason to breed ANY dog or bitch UNLESS it's one of the greatest, high performance, hog dogs you've ever seen.

I think it would take several generations to get just a fraction of the wild out of them but I'm not gonna go there with it.
My concern (and it may be stupid) would be the amount and thickness of the hair. Would you have to worry about it over heating?

TBob- thats why I have never bred him to anything yet, because I have never found what I am looking for and only a couple that I know of I would breed him to. I would agree with that but still a little curious....
I was asking though to see if anyone had ever used one or knew much about them.
Ryan- I was worried about the coat on them as well. Its hot enough around here w/o all the extra fur.
The pup is only 2 months old +- so I have plenty of time so long as Achilles stays alive on my end while hunting! Knock on wood.

wasn't tryin to jump on you, I have been around a couple of these "wolfdogs" but none have ever been hunting dogs so I can't help you on that end |

my only thought on the subject is Why? I see post like this and wonder why folks try to re invent the wheel or try to make a new breed of dog. Does your cat not suit you? Is that the reason for a drastic cross like wolf x cat?

Like halfbreed said its to wild you'll never get it out of them i had a coy dog and was one of the best hog dogs i ever owned but at times would stay gone for days and was very protective over her catch.Best to stick with most breeds already in use.

Well, it wouldnt be re inventing the wheel  . It was a thought that crossed my mind, and my cat suits me great, if I had 10 dogs like him I wouldnt ever have anything to worry about. I could go hunt ten different times with ten different dogs. As far as crossing them though, there are alot of dogs that are in all actuality a cross, Dogos, Cats, etc... Dogs that we all use in this sport. Cur x Cat crosses, Pit x Cur, Plott x Cat and the list would exceed 100 and 100 times over.... Just saying.... |

It's seems to me if a wolf made a good hunting dog, Then we would still have wolves instead of the various breeds. The original domesticators seemed to be moving away from the wolf and weve been moving away ever since. Just a thought. My neighbors had a wolf dog once. It was a mutt. They loved him cause they read books and watched movies where every indian had a wolf dog that was the best fighting/hunting dog around. I have never seen one that was any more than worthless for anything besides biting and running away when your trying to catch them.
