The male decides genders of the pups. I don't think the female has anything to do with sex of the pups. Each parent gives a chromosome two chromosomes per trait/feature. Females give X chromosome no matter what and males give either a X or Y chromosome. XX you get a female and XY you get a male pup.

Dog,hogs, coons is right...no wives tales on that one...the female has to have XX chromosomes to be a female and therefore she can only pass a female chromosome that decides gender...and to be male one must have an X and a Y chromosome...so the male determines the sex of the female as we know it....I do know there are men that have had five or more daughters and no sons...and some with all sons and no daughters...don't know exactly why that happens but more often than not it is a 50/50 chance of having either...but my logic tells me that if there are 3 "X's" involved and one "Y"...then there should be a greater chance of getting females but not true...
So the offspring is really decided by how the males X or Y chromosome lines up with the females X chromosome...I am sure there are reasons why some produce more males than females and visa versa and some other theories that have not yet been proven at this time...
