I want to think I'm a hog hunter and that I feed hog dogs. But if I ever get lucky enough to find a big cat track, bear, or big foot.  Im fixing to try and put my dogs on it.... They are not tree dogs but I sure would like to tree these with them!  Smiley Smiley  So yes I would be encouraging them to trash.  While I'm at it I'll go ahead and admit it...... I was trashy when I was younger!   Could help it, it just looked to good to pass up.....Now I realize I have too much to loose for just a little trash baying!  I now try to avoid any situation that could possibly make me even consider being trashy.   And if I end up in one of those situations I run like  hell and get away from it!   A dog just has to realize the results of trashing, just like men do!    Generally speaking!!!

Y'all have never saw a post where I talked crap. There are a whole bunch of folks that would love to have the dog that caught the cow. As I said I don't hunt around cows didn't know there were cows there. While y'all are culling dog I'll still be catching hogs.

For the sake of clarity, I ain't telling you to cull your dogs at all, just addressing another issue that was brought up.

I honestly didn't think you were.

I would give mine a good whoopin if they bayed some of the land owners cows but if they were to solid catch one and not listen to me and my commands to stop... They won't make it out of the pasture alive... I have the upmost respect for the cattle owners on the very very few places that I have to hunt and I give them my word on the care of their livestock.

I have had two pups take off towards some cattle and I yelled stop and shot at their feet. Luckily for them they came running back to us.

Most hog dogs originally come from old cow dog blood. It's in their nature to bay cows ! Now granted they need to be broke off of cows if you are hunting hogs with them, especially in areas where land owners are touchy about their cows. But to make statements along the lines of , you are giving hog hunters a bad name or if they were my dogs I would of culled them is ridiculous. It's just my opinion but most people are rougher on other peoples dogs than they are on their own. They say you should do this to your dog or you should do that to your dog but don't hold their own dogs to the same standards that they tell other people that they should. I've heard my dad say several times over the years that a dog that will not bay a cow, bay a horse, run a deer, or kill a chicken more than likely won't turn out to be worth the bullet it would take to kill it. I've seen dogs with great handles that still make their owners look like fools from time to time. Chit happens. Nothing will make you look like a liar quicker than a dog or a horse. Maybe I'm just being a little touchy because I grew up with cow dogs before I started hunting hogs and most folks around here love a good cow dog but I can't help but think that if everyone actually culled for everything that they say they culled for then there would not be near as many so called "hog dogs" in the woods or on the dog trade. I'm hard on my dogs and hold them to a high standard but the standard is based on common sense. This is just my opinion and I don't care if anyone else agrees with it or not.

there is a big difference in what I call a cull and a trashy dog...I love a 6-8 month old super trashy pup...especially if he don't give up a deer race and he is running alone on a dark and moonless night...cause I know he has potential to make a good hog dog...

x10  The worst pup i owed is now the best strike dog ive owened!!  Suerman, the dog that most have heard a little about was the worst deer striking machine and run it not for just a couple hundred yards.  He would get down and get gone on one till about 2 years old.  He came closs many times to being close to the dirt, but look at him now!

Two very interesting topics on one thread.

Dogs trashing on cows.....

No big deal. Most hunting dogs with any kind of gameyness will do this naturally. But no problem, just correect them until they dont do it any more. A shock collar works great but isnt necessary. A firm no, and a green. Switch work just as good. It just may take a few more times depending on how quickly the dog learns.

The other topic seems to be to cull or to find a home .....

Everyone has the freedom to make their own decision on this matter. Me personally, I go with the cull method.

After a cull type dog goes to a home as a pet and several months down the road it has chewed up five water hoses, two welcome mats, and killed the neighbors chickens...it is quicly given to some young aspiring hog dogger. Said hog dogger takes  it to the woods and it wont leave his feet. Then it winds up on ETHD DOG CLASSIFIED for $500 as a jam up, finished hog dog. Lol

Mrs. Dinah, I'm on the same page as you as far as the cull or find a pet home goes........ My outlook is that the dog was not raised as a pet, brought up as a pet, trained as a pet. Mine are here for 1 reason, to go to the woods and catch hogs when I have the time to bring them. Yes they are part of my family once they have earned the right but IMO its not much different then getting rid of a junky car.....if it doesn't work send it to the junk yard not the used car lot LOL
