As Forrest Gump once said, "I'm not a smart man" (but my dog is) lol
Some of you won't care becuase your not looking for the same traits I am and that's cool, I understand we all like different things. If I can I'd like to brag on a pup for a moment, he did something that really impressed me this evening.

I recently got a pup about 5 months old from a friend of mine and yesterday evening after a few weeks of having him here, he just kind of changed. I cant explain it much better than saying he went from seeing me to watching me. Today I got to playing on the four wheeler in the front yard and he went to play bayin it, he was heading it and juking and jivin, and as I noticed this happy game he was playing, I went to trying him on purpose and he got some moves! It was like watching a bay from the cows perspective!

So after I decided to knock it off before I taught him bad habits, I noticed him watching my every move and trying to figure out what I was doing like he actually wanted to help. Again, I know it sounds odd so you can figure me for an idiot if you want. Anyway, I saw his desire to be busy so I walked to the pasture fence and told him to get a cow up who was laying down. (he had bayed cows at the friends house but really for me yet) keep in mind, this is a 5 month old pup, he immediately went under the fence and looked at me for direction and so I pointed to the particular cow and hissed him to it, he went to bayin. So I let him bay for a while then got to wondering how smart he was.

At that point I spoke up and whoop hey! Get the pig! And pointed further behind him, he kept his position but focused on my hand (from 20 yards out or so) and I told him again, "haaaw, get the pig" and pointed behind him to the hog pen. He turned and ran out of the cow pasture and headed to the pig, stopped looked at me and I pointed and haaw'd a few more times and turned and went right to the pig and bayed her, all the while looking back to me ever so often. I let him bay for 10 minutes or so and thought here's an opportunity!!! I told him " haaw haaw hey! Get a cow" that sum buck stopped on a dime and ran back to the cow and went bCk to bayin it! I let him at it for several more minutes and noticed that in all the commotion our stupid cat had come out from under the house to see what all the commotion was about. So...
I whistled and said "here, here, out, here" before I got the last "here" out, he was back at my heels and looking in my eyes. I pointed to the cat and sicked him to it. He went right to baying and the cat realized the pup wasnt playing the same game this time! So he jumped on our big table and the pup stayed hooked! WELL........ right up until my wife finally came outside and said "what the heck are you doing??" at that point I laughed, told him " leave it" and he stopped and came to my toes, sat and looked at my eyes again.

I pointed to the porch and said "good dog, lay down"
That's what he did.

Now after all that, if your like, well duh, the cat story is kinda dumb, dogs hate cats, then I can tell you, him and our other pup that's still runnin loose lay on the porch cuddled up with those cats all day and all night and even eat out the same bowl at the same time as them. Not only that, but as I speak, those pups and cats are layed up on the porch right now, chill as cucumbers.

Intelligence is something to behold and once I got to see it with that friend of mine a few years ago, I knew that's what I wanted someday. Hopefully, if the good lords willing and the creek don't rise, my kennels are headed that direction.

As a disclaimer, I ain't had a thing in the world to do with breeding any of these dogs, just know some good good men who have real dog sense and been blessed. Also I didn't do no "training" that pup was just bred for work by men who work em hard and don't make excuses.
My hats off to those fellas!

How bout y'all? Brag on your pups too here, what the heck may as well.

Grin  T-Bob, looks like you got a highly intelligent canine on your hands.  In one afternoon you had him working a cow, baying a pig, and treeing a cat up a table all on command. Tomorrow evening you should see if he will fetch you a cold one out the cooler. Should take but a minute or two for this rascal to figure it out,   Grin

T-bob...my hat's off to you...giving credit where credit is due...at one time I had a yard full of dogs I thought were as good as any and they were bred in my yard...but these dogs were already hunting dogs prior to me picking up and going forward with that line...so the men before me had already done the hard work and all I was doing was  selecting the best and going forward from there...

some of the dogs I had then some folks might say they were once in a lifetime dogs if they owned them...others might of called them culls... Smiley I thought they were good to great dogs but those are common enough...

but I had one that in my eyes was truly a once in a lifetime dog...he was the smartest puppy I ever raised and he could do things as a pup that was astonishing to me...never have I bred a puppy that could do what he could do when I tested them and compared them to him...he was smart and I loved hunting behind that dog...his brain power was the difference between him and all the other dogs I had since him...most all the dogs after him that I kept were related to him but none like him...in my opinion a once in a lifetime dog happens once and to sometimes maybe twice...I also believe that those type of dogs are so far from the norm that it is hard to reproduce them...

I tend to look for brilliant puppy sign while others are looking for hog sign... Grin

sounds like you have a smart puppy right there...keep us posted on his progress...does he come from cow dog stock or both hog and cow?

post some pics...

Thanks Rueben, he's from cow and hog dogs, just a stock bred cur.
And as far as pics go, this world is full of crooks, I'll post pics of him once he's got some age to him and know to eat anybody else's hands off for grabbing him. Lol  Cheesy. That and, I don't wanna jinx it.

Awesome t-bob, sounds like he may be on his way to being a once in a lifetime dog.

I have owned one dog like this in my life. She was not a hog dog but rather a bird dog... as intelligent a dog as ive ever seen. I bought her at 10 weeks old, a week before dove season opened years ago. I brought her hunting opening morning that same year. I left her kenneled at my truck roughly 250yds from where i sat to hunt to condition her to the gun fire and she proceeded to raise hell until i finally went and got her. I leashed her to my chair and continued to hunt. The first dove i shot with her at my side happened to land not 20' in front of us and I immediately noticed her concentration at the fallen bird, in an aytempt to not put the cart before the horse i made her stay while I retrieved the bird. Shortly thereafter while waiting on another shot i happened to glance down at her and noticed that she was staring up and behind me with the same stare that she had when she saw the first bird fall. I turned to see what she was looking at and sure enough, 2 doves had landed in a tallow tree just behind and to the right of me, i repositioned, took my hat off stood up and threw it in their direction to flush them out of the tree, when they flushed they flew perfectly for me to be in position for an easy quartering away double. I looked back down at her and by the look in her eyes I just knew all she was waiting on was the go ahead, at 11 weeks old that little pup retrieved not only her first dove but her first double. She quickly retrieved the first without The slightest hesitation and dropped it at my feet then turned around and did the same with the second. I to this day still tell people that i never trained her, just refined her skill. From that point on she retrieved damn near every bird myself or my dad shot for the next 6 years. She was an amazing dog, she continued to impress me until the day she passed away.

She was as intelligent and versitile a dog as ive ever seen. Another short story about her...... A buddy of mine was deer hunting his family farm not far from the house, he called me one morning and said he had shot a good buck but had lost its trail and could not find it and asked for my assistance, we scoured the area for the next couple hours with no luck other than a spot of blood every so often then nothing......my buddy was getting frustrated so i said hell let me go get daisy, my thought was that she could find a fallen dove in a sunflower field with ease so finding a deer should be a cake walk........ We brought her out there and took her to last known blood, i simply told her to "find the bird" and off she went, not 10minutes later hell broke loose, we ran to her as quickly as we could and found her latched on to my buddies bucks neck, he had made a decent shot, just a hair over the heart though and the deer was still alive, i hollered daisy off and tommy quickly dispatched the deer, just like that she became my bird and tracking dog. She was my best friend for years and one I will fondly remember until the day I die.

RIP Daisy, you were and still are the best dog ive ever had the pleasure of knowing.......if dogs don't go to heaven then I don't want to go either...... send me where they go when my time comes.....

T-Bob, tell us a little about how this pup is bred if you would. He sounds like a real good prospect.

I know what you mean.

What an awesome feeling it is too.

My female Stag pup and I have that 'connection'.....and she is extremely intelligent as well, especially for her age. She's not just there when she looks at me.....she's THERE.......if you know what I mean....

Congrats on the awesome pup you have.

Justin...that is an awesome story...I think it takes a dog person to see and appreciate what you saw in that pup...

T-bob...you are right about getting a good pup stolen...that pup I was talking about got stolen at about 6 months out of my back yard and luckily for me my niece saw someone walking down the rail road tracks with a pup that looked like my pup...and my brother saw a car riding around the nieghborhood that parked next to my house, he recognized one of the passengers as someone that had hunted with me before... that guy had seen what that pup could do in the woods at 4-6 months...luckily I got my pup back...there is only one house between mine and my brothers...

How much u want for him? I'll send u the $$, you just instruct him to take a cab to my house in Al. I bet that rascal would make it to my front door!  Thats a great story and sure makes u proud. Hats off to the breeder, but u can put the smartest dog in the world in the hands of a dummy, and he'll never use his potential. U deserve a big ol "attaboy" to for recognizing "EXCEPTIONAL" and givin that pup a chance to EXCEL.  Will be allotta fun watching u post on his progress.

Aw heck, I'm gonna write his name on a 22 shell and put it in the drawer same as every other pup around here.  laugh

I thought about not telling anybody but I'm a big mouth and can't help sharing when I see something neat. Thing is though, pups are pups and most of them don't make the grade as dogs. Not being a "tough guy", just tellin the truth, Hope I didn't jinx him! Lol

Well now this is going to be an interesting thing to follow......t-bob, I'm envious of you man. I think that every true dog man....or woman deserves a dog like you may have there and like Justin had in Daisy. I've been lucky enough to have had one myself and I treasure the memories of her. She was a Lab and I did train her in a way but it was a pleasure not a duty. It's magic to see a pup come to the realization of what it was put here to do at an early age. I think you may have one of those t-bob. Good luck with him and keep us abreast of his progress please.

Heck of a pup u got.

My best is dusty. He is a lab. Only training he got was fetching bottles in the yard. His first duck hunt was great. Shot a bird sent him he looked at it funny then at me I told him bring it and he did. Duck training was now over. First deer trail I shot a doe saw where she fell in a rice field and decided to try him. He found it no problem. Even had him bay a small pig once that I ran over with the wheeler before I sent him. He is also a great watch dog. He is now 12 years old and I dread the end.
