I have never had this problem before so I wanted to see if any of yall have encountered this. We have a litter of 9 week old puppies that are all being kept in a large pen together with their mother. There are eight pups. 6 males and 2 females. The largest male of the litter quickly became the most dominate one at feeding time. Pretty normal.

A few days ago we heard a pup screaming. It was the large dominant male being attacked by another male. James had to go in the pen and separate them. The pup doing the attacking wouldnt stop. He had to whip him. As soon as. James exited the pen it started again. I went in and broke it up. Two seconds later another pup jumped on the big male pup and started ripping on him. The rest of the litter joined in. I removed the big male pup from the pen and all was peaceful again.

I tried to put him back in the pen today thinking that they have had time to cool down......nope.....they immediately jumped him again. So I removed him again.

My question is have yall ever heard of a litter of puppies deciding to single out one pup to try and kill? Maybe the runt but not the largest most dominant male?!?!?!

yep !  dogs with any grit at all will eventually get tired of being picked on and dominated .  and usually the bully of the bunch will get his behind handed back to him  lol  . once the rest of the pups figure out that ol bad behind is not so bad , well then it is payback time .  it's not unusual at all seen it many times  .  kinda like when the school bully gets his nose broke by the little guy that he has been picking on ,and runs home crying ,  well then the rest of the class will break his nose too   lol

Not in those numbers. Pretty typical when you have 2-4 pups. Fight starts and everyone piles on one. Never seen it, but I Guess it could happen in large numbers as well. I Would think the pups would work it out and settle down after a bit though.

I've always been told that dogs are just like people. You show favoritism to one and the rest will get jealous. I don't know how true it is but it does make since.

Thank you. This makes sense to me. But I figurednthat they would whoop his behind and be done with it. I didnt go into detail since this is a public forum but lets just say that the other pups made it clear that they want this one dead.  Huh?   Ive just never seen such ferocity in two month old pups.

Yup, I go in at the first fight grab both by the scruff of the neck and pick them up. To make it clear that I am in charge and don't put up with it. But at nine weeks I would just pull him out and put him on food maybe add some suppliments. But I would do that before things get bad and you have to cull any dog.

With puppies we usually dont interfere and its usually over in a few minutes. This went on far too long. We had to break it up. I didny want to have to stitch a pup up.

Yes, they should be pretty gritty. Their parents are gritty and since these are line bred, im thinking maybe that trait has been intensified.

Well, our adult dogs would never tollerate being housed with other adult dogs but they do fine hunting together. So if the pups turn out this way, I will be fine with it. However, if they brawl while on a hunt, that will be a different story. The dogs that we have may have tried fighting on a hunt once but quickly learned that it will not be allowed. It usually only takes one correction. Cant catch hogs if the dogs dont get along and hunt as a pack.

mine have always been the same way, as long as I can remember and with multiple different dogs thru the years, never a problem in the woods but they don't tolerate being penned together at the house.
