I personally have to be right there looking at the bay or within range to hear the hog. I hunt where people run a lot of livestock and even though my dogs are livestock broke 300 yards is a lot of room for error

Also consider that this is a pit. Pits don't really have the build to be cut lose at 300. JMO

The ones I feed here do.

I lead mine in though, I don't cut 'em loose that soon myself.

The cd I spoke of earlier is a pit. Not all pits weigh 75 pounds plus and not capable running 100 yards without their eyes bugging out. I have seen lots that couldn't make these runs but I have seen plenty that could and look like they were just getting warmed up when it was over.

The last time I hunted I was with 3 members of this board, we were on the edge of a milo field and had dogs baying on and off in the field for quite some time, I think they hit a sow and shoats....anyway there was a pretty solid bay going for a couple minutes roughly 500 or so yards in front of us, close to the edge of the field.......we sat and listened for a little bit and every time it seemed like the dog had the hog shut down they would go quiet again, the problem we had was that i want to say 4 or 5 dogs on the ground and they were all on their own pigs and were having trouble stoppin one of them running devils down in the thick milo, no 2 dogs were together if I remember correctly.......anywho I made a comment, something along the lines of "hell i should just turn blue (my cd) loose" and the man who invited me to hunt said heck turn her loose........ I honestly thought it was game over by watching her blaze to the bay on my garmin and I wont lie, I was gettin pretty excited lol.......well with my luck the bay dog went silent and another dog opened up in the milo, she turned sharp and headed towards it, no sooner than she did the bay dog that was on the edge of the road opened up again but she was heading to the other dog who had gone back to running its hog............

long story short it almost worked out great for us but looking back I wish I had held onto her and walked her down there closer or even waited for the first bay to settle.....maybe we woulda got lucky but as they say, hindsight is 20 20........ the moral of the story in my opinion is that every situation that we as hog hunters run into is different and while our dogs are all there to do the same thing no 2 dogs are alike, another mans bulldog may very well have stayed the course and caught the hog..... Thats part of it...... I am usually like most of you in that I like to be close to the bay to before turning my bulldog loose so that I can get to the hog and dogs quicker but as I said above, every situation is different and I tried what I THOUGHT would work that night. just my opinion on the subject! Happy Hunting folks!

in an ideal situation I am the same way but these dang southeast texas thickets don't always allow me that luxury lol

i would like to see the bay dogs bay but 99% of the time its so thick you have to crawl in there and alot of time its bay and break around a big thicket so we will let the bulldogs loose when they can hear good and get a good direction from however far and when they catch drive out four wheelers in to them it sure beats crawling in to 20 yards and hog breaks and having to crawl back out. the only place i ever hunted i couldnt hear a group of dogs baying was in the mountains but in these saw briar thickets its easy to hear a dog 300 yards.

Just depends on how hard it is to get to them and how long it's gonna take me. I have been on my Hands and knees crawling to my dogs many times. May take 30 minutes to get to them sometimes. I want to be near just in case all Hell breaks loose. Most of the time if I have to send in a CD. He is a goodun or its several.
