Wondering if anyone has any pointers they use for bird dogs? Or any dogs really. I have never had a bird dog but have always wanted one. I have an opportunity to get a full blooded English Pointer from a co worker, but would only want her if I could make her a bird dog. Just curious on their training and how they respond to it. How often they need worked with, and if they learn fast. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

what type bird hunting are you primarily doing? I'm sure that just about every breed of pointer/setter/retriever will work as an all around bird dog, your individual breeds will all have their positives and negatives regarding what exactly you are planning to hunt with them. |

Mostly just reteiving dove, I dont have enough quail here to hunt. I dont duck hunt, but have always wanted to start, but I hear Pointers are not the best retreiving in water.... Pretty much I dont wanna get off my lazy ass to pick dove up, and the fact I love watching dogs work, so its a win win haha.

Mostly just reteiving dove, I dont have enough quail here to hunt. I dont duck hunt, but have always wanted to start, but I hear Pointers are not the best retreiving in water.... Pretty much I dont wanna get off my lazy ass to pick dove up, and the fact I love watching dogs work, so its a win win haha.
while i'm sure a pointer would do the job for you just fine, I personally would look for either a lab, chesapeake or german shorthair if dove hunting is your main concern. |

Brittney's good retrievers and hunt good to boot . my buddy had one he allways brought to the dove field . that thing was better and faster than my nephew lol . them pointers and setters will retrieve that is if they don't lock up and just point at it .

For what your wanting I would get a lab. Raised them for years for dove and duck. Then I kinda swapped to weimeraners. They both learn fast. Weims are extremely energetic almost to much. They say they are like dogs with human minds and if you have ever raised one you probably know what I mean. Still have two swims and both are great dove and duck dogs. I also have two gsps and they are another good one. But I do have a buddy that his will fetch but on a dove field he points the bird instead of retrieve which is kind of useless unless you can't find one but yet u still have to go pick it up. Seen some good Boykin spaniels for dove and duck as well. As far as the English pointer I have seen spike of them but I don't think I have seen one for a dove or duck dog just quail and pheasant. I think you could train one fairly easily the only thing is that it could point your dead birds but in quail hunting they point flush and retrieve so I think you will be alright. But I will say if I wanted a dove dog I would buy a lab or weim
