Some one on here said he worked on a past thread . Getting the stuff at home depot isn't expensive and it works. The oil may work but I doubt any deck builders use it over the stuff made to seal wood. I wouldn't cut corners on it. Get the real stuff and be done

Usin motor oil wont hurt nothing. It naturaly repels water n has been used for 100s of yrs to treat n repel moisture, which if u look at them treatment liquids, it boils down to a petroleum product. Usin the used oil (not oil out of a diesel) will save u money and deffinately wouldnt call saving money, cutting corners.

burnt oil mixed with diesel will probably work and is cheap enough to reapply once a year if needed...

Would the oil soaked wood give on a harmful or toxic odor/gas in the middle of the summer when temps rise? I think I would use PT wood and or something sold in stores that doesn't have warning labels about contact with people or animals.

Thx guys...guy that told me bout it said he has used motor method for 35 years and never hurt his dogs either. He said apply it then leave it out in sun for bout two days before putting dogs on it. I'm gonna try it...when I finish I'll post pics of these kennels. I wouldn't call it shortcut either, cost effective yes.

My grandad used it for years still uses it if we have enough. We have done dog kennels corner posts centering posts and most recently beams under our new front porch.

Even the treated lumber has an odor. The oil aint bad, but it depends on the type of oil. Diesel oil has a lot of carbon in it, leaves the black marks everywhere, hard clean up from it and has a funky smell to it. Small car and light tck oil is farely clean n doesnt hav as bad a funk. Pressure treated lumber is just as bad as any other chemical on the market, u just hav to pay more it than to treat the limber urself. I'll let the fools waist their money while i save money, or cut corners, depending on which part of the dollar bill ur from.

use to work for a cement man he would mix diesel and motar oil and spray all his lumber with it, sure did keep the lumber from warping only problem with it was it got on our clothes and made you smell like diesel but shure kept the lumper from warping and rotting.

I put it on trailer floors and on my cattle pens. It also keeps my horses from cribbing on the boards in the pens.
