Its a judgment call. If you are invited on a hunt with buddies don't bring a gyp in heat if it could spoil the hunting. If you are inviting your buddies on a hunt do what you want. If you want or need to hunt your gyp in heat just tell them to leave the males at home. Chances are a gyp in heat wont hunt as hard when they are in heat and hormones are out of wack. That's very common. But if they are a decent dog in the first place they should still be able to get the job done even when their mind is not 100% right. The easiest is to keep them locked up. But there is nothing wrong with hunting a gyp in heat if you are own your own terms. If you were invited on a hunt then its a different story. My main bitch is not receptive to strange males, she would not let them mount her anyway even if she was full blown hot. I've hunted her lots when she was in heat. You can put vicks vapor rub around the vag. when they are coming in and going out to mask they scent and narrow the time you have to keep them up. A good male dog should get the point and get to hunting after a while any way. If they are easily distracted by lingering scent of a gyp that was in heat recently well that's just any easy way to spot the culls.
