I've been a Roofer thirteen years and i'm about burned out. My joints are so stiff and all I can't hardley do it anymore.plus I've gotten to hot and was unconscious once for an hour or so about six years ago.I'm ok now but in the past few years I've mainly done sales in the summer because of my intolerance for 140 degree heat on the roof since getting to hot. I used to make awsome money. now I am a bottom feeder subbing jobs for a third of what I used to get.I spend half the year saving everything I get so i don't starve the other half. I want out so bad but can't feed a family of four on three or four hundred a week. I have no education other than high school. I can't make enough to support my family and go to school.my wife has no education and broke her back in a car wreck so she is mostly disabled as far as most factory or manual labor jobs.I have never been fired in my life but roofer on an application is almost a guaranteed no.I think i need a on the road job or something for a year or two that pays really well. So i can save enough to pay for schooling for me or my wife. My question is, Where could i get a really good paying job? i'de like to make 1500.00 or so a week at a minimum. I can live well on about 600.00 because i only owe on my house. So i could save at least half.I can handle ground temps in summer just not on the roof. It's just to hot up there.I think I'll end up dead If I stay up there.I'm sick every night.I'm no asking for a favor just need pointed in the right direction.

Take a drive to south Texas. Oil and pipe line towns. Be ready to work. Or try around midland to Stephenville. Lot of jobs. You need to show up in person, internet will have you in back of line.

look into truck driving in south texas, EVERYWHERE down there was hiring last time I was down there a few months ago.
or look into Inspection work in plants, I have made a pretty good living off of it. starting pay is around 12-14 an hr.......if you can follow directions correctly and have 2 eye balls you can pretty much do it lol. not much physical labor other than climbing towers and around in pipe racks and in/around vessels.

Your post makes my heart ache. You appear to have lots of roadblocks in front of you.
My inclination is to tell you to get an education so that you have more and better opportunities. But that doesn't seem practical considering all the issues you listed.
The next thing I would lean toward is finding an occupation where experience can be rewarded. Many have suggested the oil & gas industry, which is not an easy field.
I hope things work out for you. I wish you good fortune in your search and your decisions.

if you want to make good money boiler companys pay good. and you wont need to fill out a application or anything like that get hired over the phone. go on the first job as a top helper and see what its all about and next job go as a boilermaker its several guys around here do it and bring home 1500-3000 a week but its on the road and working 7 days a week. look up national boiler services, RMR mechnical, Performance contracting, PMIS, SWS " speciality welding services" all them pay good money and P2S " they do alot in lousaina" that might be closer for you, but if you can get on with any of them and meet some people you will be able to get in on some of that good money then if your willing to be on the road you can stack some money up

Get on internet and look up MWD work it is easy work and good pay I know a lot of them that get hired with no experience. Some of the companies are Drilltech, MWD services, Helmer Guidance, Baker. You will not make a lot while training but should make 90 to 100 grand a year After but will be gone a lot. I do directional drilling and MWD companies seem to hire a lot.

thanks for the advice everyone. I really appreciate it. I live in mo but I would be willing to go to the work I think. I used to have my own roofing business that was successful for several years but It's just not the same since the illegals made it to mo.Their are few american crews anymore. combined with the recession that hit in 09. prices are low and most get four or five estimates of which theres always a low baller in there thats trying to run volume cause hes got a crew of mexicans. I just roofed a big nursing home that was 198 sq. and came out after labor with 1,200.00 because I had to do it for the price of a illegal mexican crew. I was a sub on it but it really hacks me off. there are no legal mexican crews that I've ever met. and I've storm chased in several states for multiple companys and supervised well over a hundred different mex crews. The guy cashing the checks has a green card the rest don't. The check casher also isn't always the boss, just the guy who gets the check for the boss.I look back now and I can see what ruined the roofing business in my area. The worst part is I had the first mex crew in my town that I know of, so it's my own fault.I hate to start on the bottom again because i'm a good roofer. I know claims inside and out.I've never been sued by a customer and i've sold and installed thousands of roofs. I keep hanging on waiting for the glory days but I guess their gone for good.in june of 08 my best month ever I cleared 32000.00 during a local hailstorm. I signed 250,000.00 in contracts in less than two weeks by myself in may 08 in fall of 08 my wife had a bad car wreck and broke her back and was immobile for several months. made it through 09 selling stuff after recession hit and the roofing stopped for two years solid. winter 2010 I filled out close to thirty application for 10.00 an hour or above jobs and got zero call backs. worked a couple weeks for a temp service but finally decided I could make more scavenging firewood.so i cut 140 some rick of wood and enjoyed every minute of it away from towns.lost my house to the bank that year but had a tornado damaged property with 2 acres in country. that I had built a weekend place on. we made it there until last november wearing blankets in the house during winter to stay warm. and sweating during summer. My wife stuck with me all through my demise even though she was raised privileged. She used to drive an Esclade XT now she drives a 01 ford focus with no air conditioner. I thank god for a good woman! I finally made it out last november and got the place good enough to sell for a good down payment on a real house with 33 acres and pay off alot of old debts.I am not a dumb kid anymore. I am a serious provider minded man. I bought my manhood with a lot of misery humble pie and hard work.(not forgetting the blessings of God.) I am also a different man than i was I no longer want to be rich nor would I ever buy fancy trucks and boats and junk again. my possessions ruled me and stress nearly ruined my health and family bonds. I want to be completely debt free and i am nearly there.I am very worried that I'm going to get in bad shape again and I am just worked out doing this stuff for illegal alien pay.I hate storm chasing It makes me feel like both a gold toothed used car salesman and a yes man. I won't be either! I hear people talking about making good money and don't have to fear medical emergency's and it sounds awful good.If someone has to go to the er it is gonna take me several weeks pay just to pay for it. I almost can see my wife losing hope I'll make good again. I don't think she will leave me but she might lose respect for me some.I really can't take the brutality of doing pitched roofs anymore.one ankle and foot dont flex right from a tree stand injury.so i start looking like a peg leg walking after a few hours on the roof.my knees hurt and my lower disk are thin like paper. I don't have trouble with them except rarely but they are getting arthritic. so I just need to find a job on flat ground that don't just beat the crap out of me.I have no trouble on the ground working but who knows in a few more years of roofing. I'm hope I don't sound depressing just felt like telling it, I was down when I posted originally I just need a way out is all. I sure wish i would have just moved to texas in the first place instead of buying this place I've got but thats life for ya. thanks again

Jagdtank, no reason to uproot and sell your place now. After what I just read there is no doubt in my mind that you have a good woman that trusts you and wont do you wrong. I know ALOT of guys in the inspection/refining industries that make DANG good money working 7-8 months out of the year out of town chasing turnarounds and live great.
for instance, you could start out as an NDE helper either in a refinery or pipeline setting at 14-16 and hour and in under 4 years be at 45-55 an hour no problem with a little dedication. The initial bump in pay from 14 to 26-30@ hr will come in under a year, after that learn you codes and inspection methods inside and out and put in the time required to become an API or CWI and the possibilities are limitless. I have a good friend right now that is a CWI that works 3 weeks on 1 week off on a production rig making over 150k a year for 9 months work.......It is a hell of an industry to be in for someone with no college experience and I recommend ANYONE that is looking to make a move to seriously look into it as an alternative, as long as there are refineries/ platforms and pipelines running there will be a demand for quality inspectors.....the work is VERY detail oriented but not extremely strenuous and hard on the body and there is endless OT to be made if you want it. If you like I can send you a list of some companies to look into.
